Denon Dolby Vision OSD

Just looking at older Denon's to see when DV was supported, and noticed the following comment:

Denon will issue / issued a firmware update to additionally support Dolby Vision and HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) HDR pass-through for:
AVR-X1200W, AVR-X2200W, AVR-X3200W, AVR-X4200W, AVR-X6200W, AVR-X7200WA* (scheduled for 2018)
AVR-X1300W, AVR-X2300W, AVR-X3300W, AVR-X4300H, AVR-X6300H (already available)

All AVR-Xx400H models are supporting Dolby Vision passthrough out of the box. HLG passthrough was added by a firmware update.

Note that On Screen Display overlay is not possible when passing through Dolby Vision signals and may not be possible when passing through HDR10 or HLG signals.

I read that to imply x200H, x300H & x400H models support DV with correct firmware, but none support having the OSD overlaid? Does this mean even volume control is not overlaid with a DV source?

Is this something that's been addressed in newer Denon's? (and if so presumably newer Marantz models too?).

No onscreen graphic overlays are possible if wanting Dolby Vision HDR.

Yes, this is still the case with more recent models:

The status information will not appear on the TV when the following video signals are beingplayed.
  • Some images of 3D video content
  • Computer resolution images (example: VGA)
  • Video with an aspect ratio other than 16:9 or 4:3
  • Some kinds of HDR signals such as Dolby Vision

Adding and mixing the graphics into the video passing through the receiver requires that the receiver process the video signal. This wouldn't then result in the video the HDR metadata is condusive with. THe same is true of any additional processing you perform on the video using the AV receiver.

I'fd not be too bothered by this. You don't really need the onscreen display while watching a movie. THe volume will be displayed on the AV receiver's own display if and when you alter it and even if you cannot see this, you can hear how loud it is.

Thanks, you're probably right that the menus are not too much of an issue, as I presume you just pause your source and then press the AVR menu/settings button if you want to make changes on the fly? (which are infrequent once done).

I can't see the front of my current AVR when I'm sat in my main spot, so volume on screen would have been nice, but not the end of the world if it's just Dolby Vision content that's affected - I assume regular 4k is fine, but what about the HDR10 which is static metadata?

I tend to not make changes on the fly. I've used AV receivers for more years than I care to recollect and got fed up with messing with stuff that doesn't really need messing with a decade in. Once you've got things setup correctly and after the novelty of all those mysterious settings has worn off then you'll tend to not want to be dipping in and out of those settings as much :)

Yes.
OSD available (inc volume) while playing back DV UHDS on my Marantz SR7012 and Denon X8500.

I've just consolidated all my remotes in to a programable one because all I ever use are about 6 buttons across 3 remotes! So no I don't expect or need to change stuff once configured!

So maybe the higher tier models support OSD with Dolby Vision then? I think the highest/latest I'm likely to go will be a X4700H or SR6015?
Keen to see what the new Aventage's release with too before committing.

I've found a report that says that it is possible with the Marantz SR6013 so I'd assume it possible with the comparable DEnon AVRX3500 or model at this level that have superceeded them?

No idea about the lower tier models though?

Yamaha models have no issue with OSD while passing through HDR10, but no idea as to whether any of their models have issues with the menus and Dolby Vision, HLG or HDR10+ when the new models include support for this?

Incorrect, see my earlier post

You should be OK then
X4700 = SR7015
X3700 = SR6015

Yep thanks I know but I am fussy and want silver - and thus the 4x00 series for Denon is needed :( I would have bought a 3600 earlier in the year when they were really cheap but they're only black!
And the best deal on a 4500 now at £769 new, is black only too.

I've also missed out on all the cheap Titanium RX-A880's! And whilst I like the look of the new Yamaha's, it seems they're going to be black only - but with the large high gloss front it might just pass!
