What I'd like to do is purchase the 500SD, get rid of the DVD player and replace it with the Denon DVD1920. Is this possible? Can I just simply connect the 1920 up to the 500SD?

You would just need to connect the 1920 to the 500 via a sound cable e.g. phono or optical/digital cable and the DVD to your TV as you would normally.
It will treat the 1920 like any other auxillary source e.g. tape. so you can't use it to "disable" the DVD player in the 500 if that's what you were hoping.
