    Hello,

Im looking to upgrade my very crappy sony strde495 to the award winning Denon AVR2803 before the begining of october end of september.I was wondering though if with my speakers this would be overkill? I have the Acoustic Energy AE package 2.My budget should be around £450 tops.

    Cheer's

    Dino.

    Overkill for what?? :)
It will make the speakers sound more like they should. If that's what you mean. If you mean is it overkill for the room (I hope you don't) then a rethink would be on the cards.....

It's amazing how nice a new amp can make the sound. The sony really doesn't have a lot of grunt, and although I found my sony 475 to be a great little amp, but the upgrade to a denon 3802 was really worthwhile. The AE speakers are good, and deserve decent amplification. You'll notice quite a lot of difference in surround sound upmixing from a stereo source as the power supply and amplification is beefier. Buying the 2803 will leave you room to upgrade at a later stage too. Pre outs help no end :)

    Thank's chaps,

I was asking as in could my speakers handle a "mid-range" reciver? rather than the room(stuff the neighbours ;) ) I was going to buy a velodyne CHT-10 and the denon 1804 as I dont have a sub with my setup. However with the Denon 2803 being only £400 it's was just to hard to resist. So upgrade amp first it is :D

Have you tried Hi-Spek (www.Hispek.com) - if you don't mind gold - I recently got an AVR 2803 from them for £359, which isn't a bad deal...

Its still on the front page of the site, but their details pages seem broken at the moment.

Also pick up the latest copy of a home-cinema mag and try ringing up some of the retailers. They are sure to have some still lying around :)

Or post in the hardware forum for a second-hand one.
