I am in the exact same boat and have also narrowed it down to these two so would love to hear some opinions.

You can get the Sony for £330 online compared to about £460 for the Denon, but from what Ive read the Denon is future proofed re DTS HD etc and also has Ipod control

If it helps I went for the 2307. I ruled out the Sony 1200 due to lack of up-conversion of signals (which was important to me). i.e. I can have 2 hdmi inputs and some component inputs and still only need 1 hdmi cable from amp to plasma. whereas the Sony would have needed both hdmi and component from amp to plasma. I guess you have to decide if this feature is important to you.

Also my understanding was that the Sony 1200 couldn't handle the new sound formats over hdmi, so if I get a PS3 in the future the Sony 1200 would only have allowed me to get dobly digitial over optical, whereas the Denon will allow me to get LCPM PCM (something like that) over the hdmi cable.

You can still make use of the next gen audio (Dolby TrueHD etc) with the 1200es, you just have to link up the analogues as optical doesn't have the bandwith.

This has confused me now, although good to know!

I had almost resigned myself to getting the Denon even though the SONY is loads cheaper, primarily due to the DTS HD factor as I was told the SONY wasnt future proof re HD sound.

If you connect systems to the SONY via the method you suggest will you really get no loss in quality and get the full HD sound?

Presumably you mean wiring up the 6 individual inputs from source to amp - I guess this is only possible from 'proper' HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player, don't think PS3/X-Box 360 have these outputs

when people say the the avr2307 is "ipod compatible":

    - have a version of the ipod click wheel on the remote?
    - does it display the ipod screen / menus on the tv?

    1. Uh, it has a directional pad and a select button if that's what you mean.
    2. It will show the contents of the iPod, playlists, albums, etc. in glorious white on grey text only. It isn't very pretty, but it works.

This is of course assuming you get the Denon ASD-1R dock:

Paul, Sony 3200 would be a direct competition to Donon 2307 (as Sony 1200 doesn't support LPCM [HD sound through HDMI] processing, only pass through).. for what it worth Oppo 981 and str-da3200 works here like a charm.. AFAIK Oppo/Denon have some HDMI issues although I never experienced it (had a chance to play with it for a couple of weeks)

    Hi Guys
I have a sony-da1200es, 7.1. I was using my Alpha 8a amp and Kef speakers untill the Alpha lost a channel! I am tempted to us the Sony for my CDs but wondered if the spec on the Sony is upto quality?
    Thanks Alan V
