Denon AVR 1910 and Sony STR DN1000

Hi

Just when I think I am settled on a Denon AVR1910 I have just seen the Sony STR DN1000 advertised at Richer Sounds for £299 (originally £499 when released)

I did some Googling and cannot find any reviews of it in this country. However, the Australian cnet.com compared reviewed it alongside the Denon 1910 and said that the Sony was sonically better! Has anyone heard one of these, got one and what do they think? I have until Saturday to decide :s

Thanks

Both are different sounding amps, denon being warm and sony being bright. It could be that whoever reviewed them prefers bright sound, who knows. Also depends on what speakers were used and whether they suited the denon or the sony better. I'm pretty sure the sony would produce a more exciting sound than the denon but would lack the richness or bass of the denon. It really depends on what kind of sound you prefer mate, maybe get a demo in a see (hear!) which one you like the sound of. I would recommend the denon 1910 but thats just me.

Cheers

Hi,

thanks for the advice. I also found another review from an American which also said that sound wise it is 'on par' with the 1910, although the Sony lacks other features (which I wouldn't use anyway).

Testing the Sony wouldn't be possible, as my local RS don't (as far as I know) have any test facilities, and you couldn't possibly get a good listen with all the noise on the shop floor.

I think perhaps just stick with the Denon, at least I know 100% for sure that i'm getting a quality piece of kit.

I went into Richersounds to get one of those Sony receivers and they didn't want to sell it to me. They told me it was 'rubbish' etc. and the Onkyo 607 is much better. From reading this forum etc. I'm not convinced that it is a bad receiver, but as they didn't have the speakers in stock I walked out at and didn't go back. My Richersound branch seem to really hate Sony receivers even though they often get really good reviews etc.

I do wonder whether they sell the Sony at a really good price to attract customers, but then they don't actually sell many at those prices?

I spent a lot more money in the end and got a Denon 1910 with Kef 2005.3 speakers. It sounds great, but I never listened to any other receivers to compare.

Might be worth giving them a ring mate. My local RS has a dedicated demo room. I know some dont but it would be worth finding out since your gonna be spending a hefty chunk of money. Either way, i'm sure you wont be diappointed with the Denon.

In my experience (and lots of others on here) as good as RS are, they tend to push onkyo products on their customers. They tried to dissuade me from buying my Denon but i was adamant i wanted it, ended up getting my 1910 and havent regretted my decision in the slightest.

Not wanting to mention any names but i've had similar from a company in the NW, I think they've recently merged too.

I phoned up my local RS store in Oxford today and they told me that the DN1000 was better than th Onkyo 607.

So what others have experienced might be just the overall opinion of that store alone.

I am still undecided about which one to choose...
