I want to get a new AV amp to replace my old analogue marantz pm 65 but my budget doesn't stretch to buying new speakers at the same time.

Would an AV amp be ok down mixing to 2 channels and still sound good? Again trying to keep costs down do I really need a sub at all?

Looking at getting a Denon 1909 and keeping my mordaunt short 904 floor standers. Then getting a mordaunt short alumni center, surrounds and maybe sub when I have the cash.

Main reason for wanting the amp now is to bypass the terrible sound card in the laptop I'm using as a HTPC by using the digital out.
