For those interested owners/potential buyers who haven't read it anywhere else, here is the exact wording of the *official* announcement from Hayden Laboratories (Denon UK) dated September 27th.

"We are now in a position to clarify the upgrade details for the AVC-A1SE. At this early stage we plan to launch the upgrade within the first quarter of next year. The price of the modification and the procedures will be confirmed at a later date by your local Gold Dealer."

    Regards

    Jim

    DENON AVC-AISE Upgrade

    Dolby Pro logic 11

This upgrade provides Dolby Pro Logic 11 decoding capability. The Dolby Pro Logic 11 decoder reproduces dynamic 5.1-channel surround sound from 2-channel sources such as TV, videos and CDs. Dolby Pro Logic 11 uses matrix decoding technology that has been dramatically improved over Pro Logic. With Pro Logic 11, for instance, the Surround (Rear) channels are in stereo instead of just mono with Pro Logic, and playback covers the full frequency range instead of just up to 7kHz with Pro Logic. These improvements let you enjoy a wide variety of 2-channel sources with the exciting effects of 5.1 -channel surround sound. In Dolby Pro Logic 11, there is a Movie mode (*1) that creates a sound field for movies, a Music mode that does the same for music, and a Pro logic emulation feature that reproduces sound effects in the way that conventional Pro Logic does.

(*1) On Denon A/V receivers, this Movie mode is displayed as "MODE CINEMA".

    2) DTS 96/24

The upgrade also brings you DTS 96/24.

High-quality 96-kHz, 24-bit sound playback from ordinary DVD-Video recordings is limited to only two channels, and there are also limitations on the picture. DVD-Video recorded in DTS 96/24, however, allows high-quality 5.1 channel sound playback in full-quality, full-motion video. DTS 96/24 also lets you enjoy both digital audio output and video output from your existing DVD player.

    3) DTS ES Discrete 6.1 + THX Post Processing

This upgrade further lets you enjoy Home THX Cinema Surround with DTS ES Discrete 6.1 Surround. Designed for the home listening environment, this provides THX post processing to give you clearly audible dialogue, more effective sound localization and directionality, and a greater dynamic range. The sound you hear in your home theatre more accurately reflects the sonic images intended by the producer and more closely matches the images on the screen.

    4) Dolby Headphone

Dolby Headphone decoding is possible with this upgrade. In conventional headphones, sound is directed into the listener's ears from two sides in order to preserve the stereo effects from the speakers. Dolby Headphone, however, generates signals that more closely emulate surround sound from the speakers to give you a more realistic multi-channel sound effect through your headphones. Dolby Headphone provides three modes:

DH1: Referred to as Dolby Headphone 'Reference Room,' this mode recreates a small, acoustically 'dry' room, well suited to both music and movie programmes.

DH2: This mode has an acoustically softer effect than DH1, and is best suited for music recordings.

DH3: This mode gives a greater sense of distance and sonic dispersion to create a large room such as a concert hall or movie theatre.

Dolby Headphone supports Dolby Pro Logic, Pro Logic 11, and Dolby Digital as well as stereo and multi-channel signals. Dolby Headphone reproduces the sonic experience you receive through your speakers from stereo or multi-channel sources.

    5) Panja and Crestron Compatability

This upgrade supports the Panja and Creston control protocols.

    6) Improved Ease of Operation

    a) Adjustable Cross-over Switching

The upgrade provides subwoofer cross-over switching with a choice of 3 cross-over frequencies: 80,100 and 120Hz. This lets you more accurately match the performance characteristics of the subwoofer to the main speaker system.

    b) Improved On-screen Displays

The upgrade gives you the option to display the value on the monitor screen when you adjust the master volume.

Note: These specifications are subject to change prior to the upgrade release.

    Sorry Sweetie!

It's a completely different kettle of fish. AVC-A1SE owners were (more or less) promised that it would be upgradeable (and at £2,500 it's not surprising) whereas the A-10SE will just be replaced (AVC-A11SRX?), as will the AVC-A1SE sooner or later.

PS Sorry, but I couldn't resist doing an AbFab with your name!

Nice one Jim. It would be interesting to know how many of us AVC-A1SE owners will go for the upgrade.

As much as i´d like the upgrade the thought of having to get my amp lugged back to the UK to the dealer, then to Denon, wait a few weeks while its done and then have it sent back to me, doesnt really appeal to be honest.

I´m likely to be without it for up to a month or two :(

Not something i´m looking forward to having the pleasure of paying for either, it could get rather expensive, transport etc etc

    cheers

I'll go for the upgrade, mainly because the Nintendo GameCube will have games coded specifically for DPL2....but I don;t like the idea of being without my amp..is this something that has to be done at a tecchie centre..(upgrades are new to me for amps)..??

The number of people going for the upgrade will largely depend on the cost, I think.
I hope it's less than £250. I think it should be less than 10% of the original cost.
I think the turn-around will be pretty speedy. Hayden will appreciate that it must be quick. What would be *really* impressive is if they gave you the option of having a loan model for the duration *and* flashed the settings from yours into the loan model at the dealers (if this is possible).

I would probably go for the upgrade at £250 if only to keep up with the DTS 96/24 and DPL2 which will probably never appear on dvds as DTS matrix/discrete aren't around much - but its only money

I'll definitely go for the upgrade too. Although the actual price is just rumour, £250 is the least amount I've heard and £450 the most, so far! We'seem to be talking early next year although I saw a guy in France mentioning May!

I was most interested to see "Note: These specifications are subject to change prior to the upgrade release" at the end of the announcement. THX Ultra 2 might be included too?? :)

It could simply have been that the press release was sent out at this point. Or that John has been too busy to post it earlier.
Its not a time critical news item anyway since it's 3 months away.

............but if you actually read the item it says "Thanks to reader Mark Webb for bringing our attention to this one." It doesn't sound like a press release to me! Time critical or not we expect the likes of HCC to tell us the news not vice versa. It also reflects badly on Denon that they didn't even bother to release details to the UK press. Funnily enough, the recently added announcement on the Denon UK site makes us the only country in the world where there has actually been an official Denon announcement, so far.

I stand corrected (said the man in orthopaedic shoes).
Like lots of other websites, we do request and to some extent rely on people letting us know of news. We have very limited resources at our disposal. The only advantage we have over similar but independant websites is that John - the news editor - already has some industry contacts (with him reviewing for the magazines). This is why we have more hardware news content than a lot of our rivals. But John certainly doesn't have the time to spend trawling the internet for news stories.
We hope you will see the websites (HCC, Total DVD, What Vid etc) as part of *your* online AV community which are made successful with the help and input of everyone who uses them.

    Hi Spectre! [IMG]

John and I have been communicating and we're now the best of friends again. [IMG]

I still say it should have been down to Denon UK to inform the press regarding the upgrade. We have had to drag the information from them but, to their credit, they are the only Denon concession in the world to have officially announced details of the upgrade. Well done to Keith Pradey, Roger Batchelor, Mike O'Mahony et al.

    Regards

    Jim [IMG]

PS Are we still friends too Spectre? [IMG]

I have just spotted an interesting item by Jim Hill, on page 23 of the January issue of Home Cinema Choice magazine:- "Denon will send you a flight case to pack the amp in and then arrange to collect it from you in order to carry out the (upgrade) operation at their factory."

Gawd! How many weeks is this going to take?? Will we be expected to pay for carriage both ways or will it be 'included' in the upgrade fee? I really don't fancy paying £100 just to send my amp to Denon and have it returned even though it might be hidden in the upgrade fee.

    Regards

    Jim:p

PS I should point out that the article was UK specific, so Hayden Labs will be the factory concerned.

It depends where the factory is I suppose. It could be either Germany or Japan, or if you're really lucky it might just have to go to Hayden Labs.

Do you think they'll let you keep the flight case?

£80-£100?? That would hardly cover the carriage costs! It's going to be a very comprehensive hardware and software upgrade and I bet it's more like £250-£400! I hope I'm wrong!

    Regards

    Jim :(

PS I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one in the world with (two pairs!) of B&W 603 S2's as surround speakers. Perhaps I am the only person in the world with them atop 60cm stands, though??

    Boogie Man!

I think you misunderstood what I was saying, or am I misunderstanding you? I did realise that you only had one pair of 603's but for the record, I have a pair of B&W 605 S2 main speakers (with built-in subs), B&W LCR6 S2 centre, a pair of B&W 603 S2's as side surrounds and a pair of B&W 603 S2's as rear surrounds. These are connected to my gold Denon AVC-A1SE.
