Denon and Samsung FreesatHD no audio over hdmi issue

I used to have a SkyHD hooked up to my denon av using hdmi and optical which allowed me listed to audio with the TV off. I've now gone over to FreesatHD which only has audio over hdmi. The problem is now that when I turn the tv off, the sound is cut and the Denon displays a flashing input light suggesting it is no longer detecting something? Is it safe to say that audio over hdmi is only allowed when you have a full hdmi chain from source to amp to tv all turned on?

Yes, excepting audio-only sources formats such as SACD.

Ah, that's a real shame. It means my new Apple Tv I'm getting Xmas will require the tv wasting electricity just to listen to music.

Your Apple TV will have an optical out so you could connect it to your Denon that way for listening to music.

Huh? I though SkyHD was an HDTV service, not a music one, and youre previous question quite definitely pertained to SkyHD. Apple TV is something else, and may well work just fine; otherwise use its optical output.
