Superb, It will almost be like buying a new amp. I'm very glad that they have added the audio delay, its a very important feature these days.

Do you know what the extra 2 speaker binding posts are for on the new 5803?
I have seen the pictures but I'm not sure, and obviously the upgrade doesn't include them

    Probably for Multizone.

The 5800 has power amp assignment to enable you to power another pair of speakers in another room. This wasnt included on the A1SE.

The 3801 has it as well.

This is a very comprehensive upgrade, $800 is quite resonable. Most intgrated amps/receivers are obsolete in 12 months, not so with Denons flagship amp. Denon are rewritting the rulebooks.

Here's a link to the PDF solely for the AVC-A1SE upgrade as opposed to the 5800. Ta Laurent!

Spikey Boy. You are just about correct. The 5800 is a receiver (tuner included) whereas the AVC-A1SE is solely an amp. We are lucky enough to be able to choose Black or Gold but the Yanks are stuck with Henry Ford's favourite Model T colour (or should I have said color?). There a few other minor differences but basically they are the same.

    Regards

Nearly, the 5800 only comes in black, it has a tuner (so its a receiver rather than an integrated amp). There are a few other differences which I don't recall right now, but nothing major.

The differences between the AVC and AVR are, and are in my opinion important omissions,:
    - Powered multizone back channel assignment,
    - RF remote signals to recharging base station,
    - Tuner (but the AVR has no Tuner input phonos)

I don't know if anyone noticed another important feature – differential mode decoding for all channels; it used to be just when the STEREO/DIRECT/PURE DIRECT mode was engaged.

I must admit, I was thinking about not bothering with the upgrade because if it's £600 (est) price tag, but this does seem to be a very tempting offer.

I thought it did that already? Uses 2 DAC´s per channel for all modes, but switches to 4 per channel for PURE DIRECT.

One thing the upgraded AVC-A1SE won't have that the retail AVC-A1SR will have is composite/S-Video up-conversion to Component video out. It seems that the video section cannot be upgraded.

Personally, I´m not too fussed about that as I have nothing with Component Video Inputs. I dont run any video signals through the amp either.

I´m sure it would have been a useful feature for those with Projectors, Plasmas etc.

While most are raving about Pro Logic 2 and endless 24 bit proccessing, and understandably so, I think of special note is the addition of the delay adjustment that help match Audio signals with Video. This will help Lip Sync problems no end.

That could have down sides too !! Ho Ho

Just imagine all those people out there trying to lip synch a video to audio.

When will you get a chance to watch the film !!

An important thing I also notice is DSD (Direct Stream Digital) decoding, meaning that SACD can be decoded and bass/multichannel management applied to it.

I'm seriously hoping that Sony and Philips manage to get the protocol sorted out to allow the DVD-A1 to play back SACD and allow the upgraded AVC-A1SE decode it via Denon Link.

Are you aware of any a/v amplifiers or receivers (other than the Denon with upgrade) featuring an audio delay option. Is there a replacement for the Denon A1SE and is it likely to have the above mentioned feature?

    Lucky you!
Do you plan to get the upgrade.
I downloaded the DS989 Manual and it does appear to have the audio delay feature "A/V Sync". I certainly am tempted.

the upgrade seems like a great step forward and has all kinds of features that i had never imagined possible from an upgrade, BUT is it worth £600? thats helluva lot of money which arguablt be better spent on my aging Toshiba sd9000 dvd player. I don't know, what do YOU think would make a better upgrade, summat like a denon 2800 dvd player or new board for 1se?
