Can I connect a turntable to the phono audio inputs on the Denon and if so will the turntable need a preamp?

    Thanks

I've never tried it, but I don't see why you wouldn't be able to? Doubt that you'd need a pre-amp either. I do appreciate this isn't much help cos I haven't actually tried it, but I thought at least one person should respond!

You would be best asking Denon direct, their website has a connect email.

I know when I was enquiring about upgrading my system to 7.1 sound they said not to connect my extra leads to the phono (turntable) inputs on my amp (additional one) use any of the others. The phono inputs on the amp look exactly like the other inputs for cd, etc but are marked off by a separate box. There must have been a reason for saying this, so I would err on the side of caution and just check with Denon first.

yes it should be fine the Phono sockets for turntables are of a different level to that of cd or tape so as long as you use the dedicated Turntable in sockets then no probs

A normal stereo amp has these inputs, phono inputs for a turntable, I don't think the Denon 550 will if it is anything like the Denon 500. It will have the normal phono, white and red plugs, for connection to stereo equipment. As I have said before contact Denon directly to be on the safe side.
