    Which is better?

Denon 3910 or Arcam Diva 79?

There was a recent review in what video of each of these players but they were not reviewed by the same person. Nor did they do a head to head. Has any one seen these players in action or own either machine. I have a DLP rear pro (RD65 Optoma) and wish to use the DVI/HDMI capabilities.

    Advice appreciated.

Which is better? My estimations of a match up:

    Features - Denon
    Redbook and DVD-A - Arcam
Picture - Tie (Denon slight MPEG artefacts, Arcam no specialist deinterlacing circuitry)
    Build - Denon
    Customer service - Arcam

Best adivce (always the same) try 'em both!

I'm not sure I would agree that Denon has the best build quality. They might look nicer on the outside but Arcam have some superbly engineered internals. In recent times on this forum I've read of a few people disappointed with issues with the Denon and some very positive feedback for the Arcam. At this point in time I reckon the Arcam is the better bet.

I've got a DV79 and it's excellent. Massively impressed with it. Demo'd both and they're both very good. You're unlikely to be disappointed by either.

They are both very very good. people have noted mpg artifacts (which i have yet to see). The Denon I dont think is as pretty as the Arcam but thats a minor gripe, the Arcam remote is totally sh**e and most will agree. The Denon remote has some great one touch buttons for HDMI/DVI etc...

And of course the Denon has HDMI AND DVI output as well as being able to play dvd-a and sacd, which is a little bonus.

I had home demos of both, and finally opted for the Arcam - no brainer for my system as the music - depth/warmth detail is just gob smacking on the DV79.

Also - if you have your system connected to iLink on the Denon, you cannot use the phono DACs which would help to warm your CD collection sound.

The visual/audio detail from the Arcam is just wonderful! Although why oh why they haven't improved the remote control problems is beyond me. Come on Arcam - let's have a fix!

My main purpose for a dvd player is picture quality and not music playback, I also have a ponto remote so that doesn't bother me either. I think I will demo both machines.

Probably the only person to think so, but I don't find the remote that bad! It's not brilliant but it certainly ain't as bad as all that. I was expecting a lot worse!

    DV79 is a belting player.

Consider this: Japanese products tend to be packed with all the bells and whistles to appeal in a highly competitive market. It is often the case that what reads like a technophile's dream may fall short in the sonic/visual abilities.

Arcam make very solid players which have a rare sense of "rightness" at the slight expense of no long technical spec lists. I have owned the FMJ DV27+ which was excellent and was only slightly bettered picture wise by the Denon A11 that I currently own.

If picture is paramount I would urge you to DEMO all the players in your price bracket!

Darren's right. Demo, demo, demo, demo, demo. When you're parting with that kind of cash, spend some serious time deciding and auditioning them. It's free and fun too!:)

There are no right answers except the one your eyes and ears tell you. Took me about a month of demo'ing to make up my mind.

    Hi.
We demo'd a DV79 and a 3910 on a Sony HS50, both via the HDMI input, same clips of film ,etc. There was no contest picturewise - the 3910 was awesome, th DV79 much less detailed and smooth. This was a shock - we both wanted to prefer the Arcam. Sound quality was better on the Arcam, but the Denon was still very good, and we bought it! Hope this helps.

Thank you blindman, your right that is a shock. I thought the Arcam may of had the edge on the denon. Just goes to show. I wish one of the mags would do a detailed head to head. It would be very interesting to see the results. Another question how much of a difference in picture quality is there between the Denon 2910 and 3910?

I'm sorry mate but if you are not going to demo these yourself then you will be bombarded with other owner's bias. It stands to reason that a trait of human psychology is a defense of purchase/ownership!

Purchasing any AV equipment can only be qualified by your eyes and ears.

It costs nothing to arrange a demo with a dealer and can often be fun - especially the bartering for a good price!

    Quod erat demonstrandum!!

Consider this analogy. Person A wants to buy a car of brand XY. Person B and C rave about car brand XY so A goes and purchases the car. Clarkson subsequently rubbishes the car explaining it falls short of the class leaders. Does that still make B and C good judges?

B and C are good judges only for long term reliability and ownership feedback.

Ultimately does it even matter what B, C or Clarkson think about your purchase?

    Just my £0.02
