I recently saw a Denon 2900 in action and was absolutely blown away by the picture quality. Now the big question is.....is this worth buying? I have a PW6 so no HDMI! Now with HD-DVD on the way and HDMI starting to work its way in I do not want to spend a fortune on a player only to replace it in a couple of years. Superfi currently have the 2900 for £500. Seems like a steal to me. Any advice or suitable alternatives would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
depends. Have you got a HDMI/DVI compatible display or are you planning to get one soon? If yes, then forget the 2900 and go for the likes of 3910 or pioneer 868. Denon 2900 is a brilliant dvd player and is well worth having. £500 sound pretty stiff, you can get one of them for about £375 on ebay!!
Hi Parklife, Sevenoaks have the 2900 for £489.95 and the 2910 for 499.95 (both region 2) Multi region versions are an extra £10 and £20 respectively. I think the 2910 replaces the 2900
kumamoto Not got a HDMI display at the moment. Not planning on getting one in the near future. Going to wait until Sky have decided exactly what they are doing and the screens are truely Hi-Def. Just looking for a DVD player to tide me over for a couple of years
If you don't need HDMI then you won't get a better picture quality for the price. The 2900 was actually replaced by the 3910 as the 2910 has inferior audio to the 2900. From what I've seen elsewhere they have also changed the video processor in the 2910 and 3910 and it suffers from the chroma bug (or was it macroblocking) whereas the 2900 does not. I'd buy it from your local Superfi though if I was you (they'll usually pricematch) as Denon's can be unreliable (they can also be absolutely fine, do a search on this forum for both sides of the argument) and it's much easier to deal with a local shop than have to send it back via a courier.
The 2900 is fantastic but if you're going for multi-region I would suggest you buy it from a reliable dealer as some people have had problems and Denon don't want to know about it if it's a multi region machine. Mind you, I had a multi region 2900 for a year a didn't have a single problem with it. Well worth £500!
There was a thread floating around a little while back where the 2900 were going for about £400. A search should bring it up for you. I have a 2900 and I'm very pleased with it.
Second (well probably fifth) that, excellent performer. Hayden labs can be a pain to deal with sometimes, but hopefully your dealer should do this for you.
Moorgate acoustics in Sheffield were doing the 2900 for around the £400 mark. www.moorgate.demon.co.uk
There is one on ebay finishing soon: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3316&item=5749913457&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW
Can anyone else tell me where they got their Denon DVD 2900? I am after a silver one but they are proving very hard to find! Moorgate have got them, but only in black. Thanks...
Don't know if it's in stock or what the supplier is like but a quick search on Yahoo bring up this other sites selling it. http://www.hificonfidential.co.uk/moreinfo.cfm?id=1980
Thanks for that, Greg. I phoned about 20 different dealers in and around London this morning and all I could find was a place in Ruislip that wasn't listed on the Denon site. I want to go with an official dealer if poss. Just rang the place you found (which is an official Denon dealer) and ordered one for £50 cheaper than I found it anywhere else! (£449). Will be with me tomorrow... Cheers, I owe you a beer!
How did you get them to that when the site says 480+13 quid delivery??? i like the silver too very interested in this.. Phil
I didn't even have to haggle, philb. I just called them up to check availability, etc and the blokey (Ben) said the price was £449! The £12 carriage is on top of that, but still a great deal. I shopped around all over the place and they are really hard to come by. Of the few places that did have it, this was definitely the cheapest. And they're an officially recognised Denon dealer, so a little extra peace of mind. I'm due delivery today, so if you want to hold out till tomorrow, I'll let you know that its all arrived OK and in one piece, working, firmware rev, etc. Toby
philb 2900 arrived today (a day late) but all seems to be OK appearance-wise. Haven't tried it with a DVD yet as I am at work, but fired it up to check the firmware rev. and got the following: DRV 030827 B/E 6237W PANEL 0043-f ...which seems to be up to date. Just waiting on my PW7 and 2805 now. God, time seems to be dragging this week... ;-)
