    Hello All

I have been given the opportunity to obtain a second-hand Denon 2803 for £250. Is this a good deal or is there a better av amp available for about the same money? I am willing to go to £350 and I believe the newer Denons 1905/2105 and the Marantz 4500 would fall into this price range.

Does anyone know how the 2803 compares to the 1905/2105?

    Thanks

    DeepS

I think you couldn't got wrong at that price, unless it doesn't work.

I've had one for the last year hooked up to Mission 78's and a Acram CD 72, for home cinema use it is excellent, for stereo I find it's okay but not as good as the AVR-100 I had before. I guess it depends what you listen to most.

You wouldn't expect the Denon to be as good for stereo as the Arcam anyway. But as LFC said for home cinema it's a great deal for the price :)

    Thanks for the replies.

I picked it up today. Firsts impressions - it certainly feels heavy! I will wait till xmas morning to really set it up and play with it.

Does anyone have any hints and tips when using a Denon receiver? Any setup infomation (not documented in the manual) would be helpful.

I don't own any Denon gear, but I'm sure there's a few here who do.

    Looking forward to your impressions!

After spending the past week installing and tweaking the av setup, I have to say I am very impressed with the Denon 2803. The amp is a good size and weight (always a good indicator) and fairly easy to setup. The OSD is very nice touch as well and I found the remote to be easy to use.

The only problem I have is the amp really shows the limitations of my old Sony Pascal speakers. I used the Fellowship Of The Rings DVD as my test material and the DD 5.1 soundtrack. I found that there was not enough bass in the opening battle scene especially when Sauron explodes. The scenes at Rivendell and Lothlorian with (choral) elven music were not as clear as I would have liked until I turned up the volume.

I will save my final judgment until I have obtained a new set of speakers.

    DeepS
