I have a Panasonic TH42PWD5 Plasma, a Denon A1SR Amp and Monitor Audio Gold Reference 5.1 + Sub

I want to purchase a new DVD player and am considering the Denon 2800 MkII and the Arcam DV88 Plus. (I am not considering these for audio output, just DVD.)

The DV88 seems to win it on paper with it's PAL progressive output. However, there seems to be a chance that an upgrade will be made available for the 2800 to PAL progressive. Does anyone know if this is the case?

Interested in opinions on these two players.

You could try an Arcam DiVA 88+ at home, most Arcam dealers will loan products for home trial, if they don't know you, agree a refund if not delighted, same result.
They will usually discount the price by 10% too so shop around, try www.creative-audio.co.uk
Denon DVD players are capable of fantastic performance but can suffer reliability issues, although touch wood my DVD-3800 is perfect up to now, buy something else :).
I am very pleased with a Philips DVD-963SA, available from www.robertsons-online.co.uk @ £308. Send it back to them if you don't rate it.
Have a look at Pioneer 757 too, a recent review picked it tops for picture quality compared to Arcam and Denon, it has DVD-A and SACD too, haven't seen one myself, but other forum members speak highly.
Try them out yourself at home is safest bet :)

Apparently Pal-Progressive update on the way for Pioneer.
Philips, Arcam and Denon available now.

Colin, I reckon it could be worth wating for the Denon 2900 which is going to be out in May. Does DVD-A and SACD. Will be a bit more than the 2800MKII but a whole lot more future proof.

Just like the Pioneer 757 is now ... which is less than the Denon 2800 already. Got my Pioneer 757 for £600 from www.leconcepts.com and got good service with them sorting out replacing a scratched unit.

Just waiting on the promised PAL Prog-Scan firmware update though.

Okay .... I stand (well sit) corrected on the price of the 2800 ... but I've seen several posts in various places that make out that the features of the 2900 are unique where they clearly arn't ...

Regardless of this I'd opt for the DVD2800MKII anyway, because I like the huge gold chassis' appearence more than that of the DV757Ai. Picture there's nothing in it to my eyes. I don't use SACD or DVD-A so I don't care about either of them and the Denon is the better CD player - if a little wooly in the bass.

The dealer assures me that the PAL progressive update can be applied to the Denon 2800 Mk II. It's still on at £550 so I'll have a word....

Anything to add on quality of output from the Denon against an Arcam DV88 Plus?

Does your dealer have Arcam and Denon ?
Ideally you should try both at home for a couple of days to make your own decision.
    That's what I did :)

and me, and decided against both, instead going for an Onkyo 939 which was better than both of them, IMHO.

What put you off the Denon and Arcam? What was the attraction of the Onkyo?
