had my 2800 about 3-4 weeks, not noticed anything like this,
apart from one disk that needed cleaning.

do you have any other disks that the problem occurs on?

Nope, picture is absolutely perfect, using component output and progressive scan on 100" screen.

only got Seven SE R1 which showed no problems like you describe... got any more example discs since I dont have any of the 3 mentioned.

my firmware shows as ESS2208... is this an older version or just the standard mr version? (I dont need the PAL progressive until I get a projector).

Only "odd" problem I've had so far was:-

some mpeg artifacts on 1 particular disc... still played on... turned out to be a very small thin thumbprint and affected only 1 chapter.

We have Tomb Raider R1 but PLV30 is on home loan. When it's back I'll check it out.

look at this i still cant beleive it so much for europe!!!!!!

We are sorry to say that, as we are only responsible for the UK and Irish markets, we are not able to respond to enquiries from other territories. Please relate to the list below for the contact details of your local Denon distributor

I've been reading this thread with some interest as I bought my 2800 from Germany too. (as an aside I actually don't think under single market legislation Denon UK can just wash their hands of service commitments like this).

I see artifacts on some disks too on very dark scenes, but on the whole I believe this is down to problems with the encoding of some disks. We have to remember that DVDs fit so much onto each disk by compression of the image and this inevitably leads to artifacts.

I am intrigued that Denon have replaced one player as 'faulty' and I would love to know if I've been kidding myself that the player was only showing up MPEG artifacts when indeed it was faulty.

A side by side showing with the 'fixed' player would definitely show this off, but failing this it might take one of us sending our player back to Germany to resolve this.

    Regards,
    Ian

    hi ian,
i e-mailed jason yesterday saying i still have the problem, but it's better than the last one i had.
i've still got my old tosh 3109 and when i play seven and enemy at the gates i don't see any artifacts at all,so the player must be faulty.

can you please tell me what discs you can see the artifacts.

    thanks

this is a joke my old pioneer 606 never had any problems like this and it was a first generation player i just cant beleive that i might send my player back to germany with a cost to my own pocket then i might receive another faulty unit!!!

i think i would like to wash my hands with this player, and buy something reliable!!

what i want to know is how it got so many good reviews for picture quality, dont this people testing the equipment check for things like this ??or are they just lucky that the test machines worked correctly (something i doubt)

I'd be interested in what discs you see the problems in,
so we can all do some comparisions with any different firmware levels (or chipset revisions if there is any).

a list of specific discs, region (2 preferably), time start/end for starters.
also details of what you are viewing on (pj, tv), connection type (rgb, svideo, component) and any other important info (100hz, noise reduction, etc).

I've seen no complete glitches, but an odd "flash"/jump that was unreproduceable... maybe the 4mb buffer hid it the second time?

think I'm on old firmware (ESS2208?)... I know there's the website with pal prog download.. are the other standard multi-region or region 2 versions available as well?

    Try this one for starters;

From 40 to 50 seconds (setup AB Repeat) into The Matrix (r2).
It is a monitor screen with a flashing green cursor on the upper left.

On RGB, Standard setting for Display. On my player the supposedly dark screen breaks up into a pattern of geometric grey patches. I would have thought this is quite a torture test for many DVD players and some would have the same problem.

My Realmagic DVD card and Wind DVD play this with a smooth black screen and from what I recall my Pioneer 717 could manage this without artifacts.

This is such a common disk it should be one many users could try on their machines.

    I have found similar problems (from memory) on;

    a) Contact r4 PAL (may be the same for UK disk). Have a look at the night sky when Jodie Foster is descending to the beach after she has gone through the wormhole.

    b) The original (awful) pressing of 2001 has many scenes that fade to black. These posterise and break up into dark grey patches again.

    c) Just watched Cpt. Corelli. In the scene where she meets her fiance who has returned from Albania. A dark interior scene with blocking of the background.

I'm running ESS2248, which was quite an improvement on ESS2208, and no different from 5248 in terms of artifacts. S-video has always been worse than RGB, though I haven't tried my player on component. Those I know who use their player this way have found no problems.

I do find that it depends very much on the disk concerned.

    Regards,
    Ian Guinan

I have had my 2800 for about 7 months now and I can honestly say that I have not experienced any of the issues you are describing.

Have you checked you black level settings? If they are too high you will see blocks in large areas of black, this is due to digital compression/decompression.

thanks Ian... I'll have a look when I get a chance...

only have Contact (r2) of those discs, my Matrix is R1 but I'll have a look at it just out of interest.

mention other region discs if you want, just said R2 preferably since I thought it would be easier if/ when someone talks to Denon or a shop.

I've also still got my faithful old Pioneer 717 to try the discs with.

where can I download the latest multi-region firmware then?
currently going via RGB Scart, so dont need pal progressive... assuming they are different.
