Looking to install a home cinema in my new house and have set myself a budget of £500 for a new DVD player. Needs to have PAL and NTSC prog. scan, be compatible to play DVD-R, and have decent CD playback.

I've narrowed it down to the following three:-

    Denon DVD-2200
    Arcam DV78
    Pioneer DV-757

Anyone feel any of these stand out above the rest, and have I missed out anything obvious that has the features I want within my budget?

The Denon gets a nod from me- Lovely performance, Universal and definately plays -r. Only thing it does have that is a bit odd is it gets a bit grumpy with scratched discs (at least the one in the office did). The DV78 might be a bit better at CD's but I would still choose the DVD2200 on balance.

If you want good CD playback, then it has got to be the Arcam.

The other 2 have some good points over the arcam, but if you are looking for good CD play back, then its not worth mentioning them.

If you can use i-link, get the Pioneer. Got mine for £450 a couple of months back - bargain! If you can't then it's more difficult, maybe I'd go for the Arcam.

Deckard, Presume i-link is only usable with a compatible Pio amp. I was thinking of getting the AX5i so I assume this would make an excellent combo.

Yes- only the 757 will use the i-link connection. I'm still a bit nonplussed about the DV78's CD replay- is it better than a DV88+? A colleague has one of those and I can't get that excited about the sonics- good but not "in a different league" to many of its competitors.

Not quite, the 757Ai has i-link which is compatible with all i-link amplifiers, unlike Denon's Denon-link which can only be used with their own. I bought an AX5i/757Ai combo in Feb for £1300, for that kind of money I don't think there's much better.

I can only go by my experiance.
I have not heard the 757, but i have owned the 656, denon 2200 and 2900 in the past and at present i own the pio 565, which is said by some reviews to be quite good at CD replay.
But my Arcam dv89 makes it sound like crap.
The 89 is just a 88+ that can play DVD-A and i would of thought that the 78 would sound just as good as the 88, seeing as it is now being reported that the 78/79, is the replacements for the 88/89.
I've also just got another denon 2900 as the layer change on both pio and arcam, + others, really ****'s me off.

But for both PQ and SQ i have not found anything that is as good as my 89 at the moment.

You watch a dvd on the 89, then pop it into the 2900 just before the layer change?

Hmm - the DV78's suggested UK retail price is £699.90 and the DV79's is £999.90, both including VAT. Perhaps you are getting confused with the outgoing DV88Plus, where there are some bargains to be had?

Individual authorised dealers are of course free to set their own prices (lower or higher!); the purpose of this posting is simply to establish the names of the current Arcam models and their SRPs.

I tried the Arcam DV78, the Denon 2200 and the Pioneer 668 (not the 757) recently and I bought the Denon on the spot. To me the picture quality was by the best, the Arcam looked somewhat grainy, and the Pioneer a little washed out. But to be honest the differences were marginal. had I bought any one of these I would have been very happy and probably not been aware of any difference. One interesting way to measure was to look at logos and text (like opening credits) to see how distinct they are

Beforehand I was more interested in the Arcam as I have an Arcam stereo amp and a CD player so it would have matched in looks. But the Denon also plays DVD-audio and SACD which I don't think the Arcam does, and it feels chunky and well built.

I have a Panasonic PD30 and Kef 2005.1 and so far am very pleased with the Denon.
