Was in the market for a Denon 1920 but it seems it is now discontinued. Only place I have found them at want £299.99 for one.

Looking for a quality player around that price mark (200-250) that is reliable, plays all the formats and media (up to and including SACD and DVD-Audio) and also has a HDMI port. The 1920 fit the bill perfectly.

Now, I called Denon and they were not forthcoming on any info just stating the replacement will be the 1930 and they are looking at bringing forward its release due to the 1920 drying up so quickly.
The 1730 was released to replace the 1720 and by all reviews and accounts it is not a patch on the previous version. My fear is the 1930 could be in the same boat (especially if they are "bringing its release forward").

So do I -

1 - Pay over the odds for a 1920 now

2 - Wait and see if the 1930 lives up to expectations some time later this year

3 - Look at an alternate model that has all the features I want. Anybody suggest any ?

TIA

Noticed today on the Richer Sounds web site that they have reduced the price of this machine down to £200, not sure about their stock levels as they mention discontinued line.

I emailed them and had a reply 3 days ago that they had none in stock.

Be careful with the 1920 - it's not all it's cracked up to be, especially if you watch divX stuff via HDMI. It gives a very small picture in the centre of the screen. It also can have lip synch issues as well.

The lip-synch problems were down to the old 1.23 system firmware which has now been rectified.

Spooky_UK, if you're willing to pay £250 for a DVD player, why the hell dont you just fork out an extra £50 and get the one you want?

My 2p's worth! :D

Still leaves the poor divx performance though.

Is it really that vital? Let's be honest, at the moment if it's divx then the chances are its either porn or illegal! ;) :D

I would say it's becoming more and more vital. Illegal or not, I would guess the rise of cheaper faster Broadband means the amount of people downloading high-rating US TV shows rather than waiting for them to turn up on terrestrial channels here or paying for Sky's showing is growing and growing at an exponential rate. No facts to back this up, obviously :) . I found it interesting that the official Lost magazine with stories and characters from Series 2 was on newsagent's shelves in this country waaaayyy before Channel 4 were screening the second series.

I saw the 1920 for £200 at empire direct not too long ago, not sure if its still there?

you would tend to find that people in the know will stream that content to theis special xboes rather than burn discs with them on.

and cfs - empire have no stock.

latest issue of What HiFi - p16, 3 stars.

That review was a joke (like all of their hardware reviews). It was half a page, they gave nothing to back up their opinions, and didn't explain any problems that they had. iirc they complained about its colour quality...what was wrong with it? Why? Was it on every disc? PAL or NTSC? Could they have fixed it by re-calibrating or adjusting the image? etc etc

I don't understand why people put so much faith in What Hifi's reviews when they do absolutely NOTHING to convince people that their opinion is to be trusted

I would wait & look at the 1930, or something completely different. The 1920 isn't worth paying £299 for, and you will be ****** off if the 1930 turns out to be an improvement. If it doesn't, just buy a 2nd hand 1920. They've hardly been around that long, so you will easily be able to get a good condition one at a good price.

I really don't think you will have to wait long for a 1930. Or, there is the Marantz 6600, which may have better audio, but is £349.

I'm holding out for the 1930 - Empire Direct are already displaying the 1730 with a 'coming soon' notice so I'm sure it won't be a long wait.

Agreed.
They make statements as fact without backing them up.

Their review of the Panasonic 32"LXD60 was so bad that it contradicted most other mags and wasn't I see with my eyes

Sorry...not really "on topic", but I wouldn't say that streaming is an "in the know" solution. It's a different one, but with it's own set of advantages/disadvantages compared to burning to a CD/DVD.

:smashin:

These two players look extremely similar especially from the back I seem to recall.

on the other hand
1920 is worth £299 in my opinion (plus another 35 for a good HDMI cable)
