It means sympathy and support, which your average heroin addict rarely gets.

I'm obviously out of touch but I've never heard of her. Because it's in the media doesn't mean it gets any extra sympathy, in not sure it's any different to anyone else.

I have never heard of her either but then again most so called 'celebrities' are a mystery to me. Never understood why we should be sympathetic to drug users.

And that warrants a sympathetic attitude by others?

Sometimes and in certain situations, yes.

An example my sister-in-law was a good person yet died of an accidental prescribed drug (painkiller) overdose, leaving her 5 year old autistic son to find her body. She had a history of misusing illegal and legal drugs but was clean for many, many years before she started a family.

Perhaps I’m confusing sympathy with empathy?

Or smokers, or drinkers, or anorexics, or soldiers, or policemen, or F1 drivers, or footballers..... ;)

Bearing in mind this is happening the US, there's a very strong likelihood that her 'heroin overdose' will turn out to be a synthetic opioid overdose.

You know, the 'good' drugs that the good doctor gets paid for giving to you. :)

The UK is catching up fast unfortunately on Opiods, we'll be seeing stories like this coming from UK experts within the next 5 years if we don't fix the problem now.

Already happening mate. I work in substance misuse and we regularly give out something called Naloxone or Prenoxad (same thing just different names) to opiate users to prevent opiate/opioid overdoses. Its a prepacked syringe that has 5 doses in it which can be used in the event of an opiate/opioid OD. If we're talking about street heroin then its very difficult to go over if you are not injecting but then again many overdoses happen not because of one drug but a combination of drugs in the body that have the same/similar effect like depressants e.g heroin, alcohol, methadone or other prescribed opiate based pain killers like codeine/tramodol etc... which slow the CNS/breathing etc.. and end up having a cumulative effect. Yes drugs like heroin/opiate based painkillers have an analgesic effect but they are also depressants so when combined particularly with alcohol or other meds like gabapentin/pregabalin can massively increase the risk of death.

But what gets up a lot of peoples noses is when these 'celebrities' start to use their assorted substance/life abuses as a marketing tool to bring them closer to their fans.

I remember when Paula Yates died the press started to bang on about how awful it was that she died so young.

Personally I thought what a selfish b*tch to be mainlining while her two kids are in the house and her daughter (who I think was 2 or 3 at the time) is left walking around with Heroin powder on assorted surfaces.

While I am sympathetic to the ravages drugs and booze can have on people I draw the line at them then inflicting it on their kids.

I think we all know someone who has died from drugs. I don’t know what the answer is - maybe more education or parental guidance.

Lots of these 'celebrities' revel in their being famous. Informing the paparazzi where there going to be, wittering on on Twitter about every aspect of their lives.

Another child actor chewed up and spat out.
I know it's hard to feel sorry for drug abusers, but that line of work is filled with them, and growing up in that culture will make it seem almost normal. Along with the immense pressure of performing when your not feeling great as BIG money and your, and a lot of other peoples career is on the line. So maybe you start off small, just a little bit to help you through this bit, and then the next and so on. uppers, downers etc.

America and other countries have a large drug culture around legally prescribed drugs, with little to no rehabilitation when you are coming off them.

The agony of opioid withdrawal — and...

That video can give a little insight into one problem with over prescription of opioids and lack of rehabilitation.

To be fair to Demi, she has diagnosis of mental illness (borderline personality disorder). Bearing in mind that "mental illness afflicts one in four of the population" (and assuming that applies pro-rata in the US), she is the statistic ex-Disney Channel star. I suspect Disney didn't use her version of 'Let It Go' because her history wasn't compatible with their clean image and the film's target audience. Colleagues of hers that also made it of course Ariana Grande (singer, obv.) and Victoria Justice (actress and musician/singer).
BPD manifests as vulnerable, not wishing to displease people. Remember she has allegedly had six years without publicised substance misuse; that is a long time for an addict, six days or six hours clean being landmark hurdles.
Remember also the big names who succumbed, relapsed and passed away because of it. Prince, Marilyn Munroe at al.
    I can well imagine the conversation between a non-caring dealer and Demi on the day of her OD;
"Demi, you don't look too great, I've got something that'll make you feel better"
"No thanks, I don't do that any more"
"Go on, just a little isn't going to hurt"
"Oh OK then, thanks"...."Yeah that was good, do you have some more, I need some more now I'm coming down."
"Yes of course I have, that'll be a thousand dollars."
    "great, here you go, ta"
    Dealer scarpers, Demi ODs.

Dealers are the real scum, just having stuff like that available for the vulnerable to take, and taking advantage of that.
I'm glad she is well enough to have been discharged into the care of her family. Hopefully they are able to keep the scum away.

I knew someone who had been clean of heroin for two years and portrayed as fully against any future use yet was found dead in his flat after OD, remember while regularly using the body builds up resistance and needs more and more for effect, after a clean period just a fraction of the regular dose is enough to kill.

Been some good posts from those concerned with addiction and would be nice to see those expanded on, without the lights of a 5 minute star.

I have heard of her, but never heard her. There was another singer with a similar sounding name - Nellie Furtado. Perhaps they should duet together when this latest one is better.

In regards to this something needs to be done, why is stalking permitted just because they are involved with tabloids.

Getting followed by a douche with a camera, taser him and smash his gear.
