Interesting development on dells website, they are now giving you the option of building a pc with either vista OR xp as your operating system. Id say its a fairly big indicator that vista is long way off completely replacing xp.....?

Er no. Because loads of people complained that they would like a choice between XP and Vista. And not have Vista forced upon them.

Vista has already started replacing XP.

I've just ordered a Dell and ordered it with XP rather than Vista. The price difference between the two was £50. I figured I only have to spend a bit extra to buy an OEM version of Vista in a years time once the bugs have been ironed out. I'm very glad I was given the choice.

Could it be the 'constraints' of Vista on the hardware affecting Dell margins because of their customised components.

A can see why people request XP though rather than the amusingly named 'upgrade' to Vista.

I buy about 3 or 4 PCs every month from Dell. About half of them I order with XP (this has always been available from Dell where I am). This is invariably for users who have old software or hardware that they want to continue using with the new PC. The price difference between <XP Pro/Vista Premium> or <XP Home/Vista Basic> is not more than £5 for a same-spec machine. The price difference between Vista Premium and XP Home is much greater, so maybe this is where the £50 came from.

Yes, Dell are only reacting to what their customers have asked for. Doesn't mean that Dell are or are not convinced with Vista, if they only shipped Vista they'd lose business, simple as that.

So really, the question is 'consumers not sold on vista?', the answer to that depends on who you ask. Personally, I think there's nothing wrong with Vista if you have the patience to make it work and not just expect it to work on hardware that is 10+ years old!

Dell are the biggest player in the corporate PC market these days, they obviously intend to stay that way for a while yet. ;)

Vista is a long way off being adopted in corporate IT world, this is why Dell have made their (forced) U-turn.

Dell are also doing Linux, they will do anything they can to weaken the MS monopoly and increase their bargining power which is no surprise really
