Dell 2408WFP - Discussion Thread

mine arrived yesterday :D

just set it up with my PC tonight - no dead pixels and it looks the shizzle :smashin:

...although I think my GeForce 6800 is struggling to display at 1920 x 1200 haha (new PC is being built now, getting a Geforce 8800GTX in that)

Going to test with my XBOX360 through HDMI and Wii through component tomorrow.

Let us know how you get on mate

Has anyone else heard reports of this monitor overscanning 1080p signals through HDMI. One of the main reasons i want it is for my 360 so I really want to know that its ok at 1080p on HDMI.

I had read about that issue myself (although don't have a 360 or PS3). I think the work around was to use the second DVI port with a HDMI->DVI adapter.
The monitor has no speakers, and HDMI is just basically DVI & Digital Audio (SPDIF).

I have noticed an audio-out 3.5mm jack, which I can only assume will route the HDMI audio to this socket, which in my mind I'm not sure how useful that woud be.

Obviously if you need the second DVI port for something else then you will be stuffed until the graphics cards support the new Graphics port (DisplayPort)

I found this resource really useful...

To be fair this monitor gets a really good write up, and i dont think there's that many issues/faults.

Hi there,
Well I think my left side is slightly brighter than the right edge where I can spot some darker shade. It is not very dark but as you said I can notice this too. Second thing is backlight bleed (not very strong tough) in top left, top right and botton right corner. In the review on http://monitortest.blogspot.com/ they only spotted slight backlight bleed in top left corner.
I am very happy in general with this screen but for 422 GBP I paid for, one could expect more. I love the size and its resolution and now I just do not want to go for cheaper 22" TN panels.
If I could be assured that when new revision is out they would replace the screen I can wait even until a04 revision.

In addition I will have to deal with DELL Poland as I am moving back home and I purchased from DELL UK.
I don't know what to do...

For All Dell Ultrasharp models the correct sound bar is the AS501 this is powered and by the monitor and clips to the bottom, they are good for basic stereo sound.

For Dell "E" Series monitors the correct sound bar is the AS501PA

If you have an existing surround sound system then these are pretty basic.

Cool. Think the Dell contact got 6 or 7 2408 sales this week! - He seemed very grateful!

Just to update you guys with some picture. I am returning the screen with a regret but I do not want to wait until dell will address these issues. May be this is my bad lack but can I do...

Sorry to hear that - Mine is fine - I don't seem to have that issue at all.

If you are not happy and don't think you want to chance getting a good one, best get your money back.

Check the warranty Dell will honour the price but will onnly offer a 3 year premium next day warranty with a 3-5 day leadtime on stock.

We have stock with a 4 year premium next day warranty direct with Dell

Just got mine this morning, ordered it monday, so pretty damn quick. All looks good, no overscanning on the hdmi which is very pleasing

Can I still get one at £386???

Chris

I have no idea! You have a PM with the Dell contact to ask!

I would like to point out that I have no links with Dell or any other company!

I just called Dell to purchase a monitor, and was offered a good price - and have just passed on the Dell contact to others!

Shame really, since I've "sold" about 7 monitors in the last week!

So I am happy to supply the Dell contact, but I'm not able to answer any specific Dell questions [ unless it is about my Dell 2408 ;) ]

Can some of you guys tell if you get brighter right side of the screen while watching DVD? What about backlight bleed in your monitors.

I would like to keep the screen and replace it at some stage but for now I am actually waiting for DELL to pick it up and refund the money.://

Just received and set up my Dell Ultrasharp, and i've only one word to say about it................stunning..........

Been following this thread before I bought my 2408 and it arrived yesterday. Setup was a breeze, straight into 1920x1200. I've updated drivers to the latest forceware, and it's quite pretty when it's all working...

At 1920x1200, I sometimes get part of the screen shifting. For example the top third is fine, but the remaining 2/3rds shift intermitently left and right. I can kinda get it to do it if I have something like winamp up and the shift occurs in line with the winamp window. I'm also getting a tiny bit of artefacting. At lower resolutions I can't get any of this to happen. I haven't cross checked with my 360 yet to see how that gets on either.

I'm hoping it's my graphics card not being able to cut it ... but then it's a 6800 ultra - surely that's enough!?!?

What do you guys think ?

I just ordered mine last night to arrive monday. Quite excited about having a big screen and reclaiming the space on my desk, yet apprehensive that the colour accuracy wont match my calibrated Mitsubishi DiamondPro 930SB CRT.

Can't wait!

Quick question, are you using the DVI input?

Yup, and having scowered forums I'm finding there's a general theme that the DVI output can't drive that resolution ... I'm gonna test VGA when I'm back home. Hopefully it wont lose image quality :S

I'm running 1920x1200 through DVI without any issues.

Was the answer that DVI in general can't support this resolution or just with the 2408?

Note that I'm also running my 2407 on DVI also, since I have a 2407 and a 2408.

1920x1200 is fine with standard DVI, but "dual-link DVI" is needed for higher resolutions that are found on the 30" Dell LCD's etc.

Found this description of DVI's limits

With a single DVI link, the largest resolution possible at 60 Hz is 2.75 megapixels (including blanking interval). For practical purposes, this allows a maximum screen resolution at 60 Hz of 1915 x 1436 pixels (standard 1.33 ratio), 1854 x 1483 pixels (1.25 ratio) or 2098 x 1311 (widescreen 1.6 ratio).

So it should be right on the limit but not hitting it (2098 x 1311). I hope it's the graphics card just nearing the end of its time, I really do.
