Dell released this new 22" monitor a month back or so. It seems to be one of the few 22" monitors to support an E-IPS screen. The limited number of reviews I have read on this one seem to like it and was thinking of getting one myself. Given that one can be picked up for less than £200 seems like even more of a bargain for an IPS panel.

Has anyone bought one of these yet, if so would you recommend it?

I'm also thinking of purchasing this monitor, Ive spent days searching for a decent monitor at around £200. Obviously with that tight budget i thought i was restricted to TN panels then i found the 2209WA. For an IPS screen seems like a great buy i was thinking of buying it off scan later this week.

So any info on this panel much appreciated

    cheers.

Well, I can't do a review cos I have nothing much to compare with but I've just bought one of these (thanks to this thread) and it is gorgeous. Beautiful quality hardware and a lovely display. Having said that the first one died within the first hour but I got a replacement over night so no big deal.

That's good to hear Timmie. How do you find the screen at various angles? Also, have you noticed any light bleed?

The blacks go off a bit at extreme angles, but these are angles at which I wouldn't want to use any screen at anyway. No noticeable light bleed.

I bought it to use as a PC monitor to give me enough space for 2 application windows side by side, but I would also say it's good enough to use for movie watching.

And thanks for starting the thread as I was about to get a Samsung 16:9 but this being a 16:10 is I feel better for PC use as opposed to film watching.

I'm one for 16.10 screens too, although the trend towards 16:9 seems unstoppable looking at the release schedules of the big manufacturers.

This is looking a good screen for a great price, although I'm waiting for more reviews before I bite the bullet.

Hi, This looks interesting, I'm looking to get a new 22" (or 23") widescreen monitor (and new PC) next month. It'll mainly be for video editing, also general office and web stuff and bit of photo editing, using DVI. Prefer the idea of 16:9 "full HD" (rather than 16:10) and HDMI, but as 99% of what I'll be doing is just from the PC I don't guess it actually really matters? I'm currently on a Fujitsu Siemens 19" square screen (1280x1024) that I've been very happy with, and similar pixel size would be good for me. For the new one I was starting to narrow down to:

    Samsung T220 (1680x1050)
    Viewsonic VX2260WM (1920x1080)
    BenQ 2200HD (1920x1080)
but if the IPS panel of the Dell 2209WA is really going to be that much better then I really look forward to seeing a couple more reviews / bit more feedback. :)

felix2, there are a few good Samsung screens with the 1920x1080 res too, but I'd go for the 2209WA if I were you.

I posted a few other Dell Full HD monitors in this post as well.

    Dell 2209WA - Confirmed e-IPS Panel Part!
    February 10th 2009 [IMG]
A Chinese language website, IT168.com have dismantled the new Dell 2209WA to finally reveal the panel being used. As the pictures show, the new Dell screen is indeed using a new panel from LG.Display, this being the . See the below link for the full article and full set of pictures dismantling the screen. It's good to see finally some confirmation that this is the first 22" IPS panel in the market, and given the very low price (<£200!) this appears to be an absolute bargain!
No information about the new panel is documented by LG.Display yet, but this is probably just because it is very new and their website is always a bit slow to be updated.

Thanks crossbow - it's strange to have so many things so highly recommended all at such (relatively) low prices!! I don't think I'll wait for Dell to get in a 23" full HD panel using IPS. Will probably go for the Dell 2209WA, but it'll be a couple of weeks before I get / build the new PC anyway. (Wish Quad core processor prices would come down as much as monitors have over the last year - or as much as dual core seem to have done!)

Interest piqued by "22"" and "IPS" in the same sentence

Would take a perfect monitor for me to upgrade from my Samsng 215TW. Its not perfect but pretty damned good so obviously I'd be looking for a upgrade to perfection, not a side-step ;) :D
Need to read more about colour temperature variations, uneven back lighting, difficulty with getting sharp text and heat from use

I have the 215TW at home and have had the 2209WA at work for a few days. Out of the two I am glad I have the Samsung at home.

To be clear I do not own this Dell, I am just reading things around the web. But as it is a new release definitive pictures of claimed problems are thin on the ground
Awesome monitor isn't it? I picked it up in the final summer when it was discontinued and Ebuyer still had a little stock left. Glad I spotted it and did my research promptly rather than picking up a 22" TN

Thanks for sharing martian1, that first review shows quite a few pictures at various angles and is definitely better than my Samsung 226BW in that regard. There's still a general lack of reviews on this model but from all that I've read it seems a very solid all-rounder.

Got one of these from PCBuyIT this week!
    PC Buy It

This monitor is amazing for the money  I'm not really one for hype & hyperbole, but considering that the TN panel monitors were still over £200 in the last 12 months the e-IPS is great step forward for low cost monitors. Will try & review over the next week or two.

Would be very interested to know about any lag or ghosting issues as well, since I would using the monitor primarily for gaming to replace a CRT.

Also, does anyone know if there's a 24" version coming out any time soon?

You can still look at 24" monitors utilising variants of MVA/IPS technology. They are out there

    Hi all,

I wrote a review of the Dell 2209WA on my blog. A short summary: This is an inexpensive LCD with good color reproduction, good text clarity and good response times. Its main weaknesses are: mediocre black level (compared with good (S-)PVA panels), angle-dependent "white glow" in dark areas (unless you sit > 1 meters from the screen).

As you'd expect at this price level, the build quality is average: some backlight uniformity issues depending on the sample, slight color shift from left to right, some noise issues, average anti-glare coating.

For more details, please take a look at my review.

    Best,

    Tomasz
