No longer needed as was experimenting with it.

ESXI 5.1 is already installed and is licensed ready to go, Can reset login and password to users choice. If you prefer i can also install a lower version.

Has 3x sata 320gb in a non raid config (but software raided and does support hardware raid of 0 or raid 1) with 8gb of ram in 8 slots in a 8x1GB configuration leaving 8 slots free. 16 slots that support up to 128GB of DDR2 ECC.

Noise level is pretty quiet at idle with moderate at full load.

Low power Xeon L5410 2.33 Ghz with 24MB of L2 cache between the chips. 8 physical cores in the server.

1x Full length 16x PCI-E slot with riser attached to the server as well.

SATA supports 3TB disks and has 1 single non redundant psu

I need this to be picked up please as its heavy and i dont have a box. I can also deliver within 50 miles of the M25, so please contact me for rates

    Price I'm after is £200

it can take two physical chips up to L5430 and I haven't tested it with the non low power versions, but i suspect it will not boot as the PSU will need to be beefed up significantly as the power draw will be double as will the noise if not higher. It has two L5410 at the moment.

Im based around the east end most evenings

What is the Dell model number? How many on-board NICs does it have? Would you happen to know the approximate power draw at idle, medium load and when pushed?

    Thanks

Three on board of two gigabit and 1 10/100 management port. It's a dell cs23 which is a custom server and like the poweredge but without so much expense as they're used in cloud clusters mainly.

Power draw depends on a few things really. Hard disk installed and type, ram slots occupied and what you call idle and under load. It's not a 0.3a server as its got two chips so its between 0.4 and 0.5 at idle and full throttle it hasn't been clocked at over 1.2amps but I did have 16 vms running at once with 100% tanked out on the chips with triple ssd. Your load may vary though

between 25-30KG and im based in Basildon in the evenings so im happy to drive up to you (or down) to deliver it for you? Im at Tower Hamlets in most of the day. Its easier in the evenings though as work is hectic at the moment.

I also dont have a box so courier shipping this is out of the question unless you want pallet rate which is very expensive so cheaper for me to drive it down to you.

    Still thinking :D

Thing is, I can't decide whether to go for a proper server class machine or build a pair of quiet hosts using desktop class hardware (using something like the Shuttle XH/DS slim PCs). I need it to be as quiet and efficient as possible :)

    Cheers

Thats not an issue. I am biased however in that these are designed for low power whereas a desktop isn't and i have run 16VM's on them with ease.

At idle its about as noisy as a desk fan, at full load its a little louder and like a portable air conditioner. But as its so efficient its never at 100% for long.

You can build desktop machine, but this is built for the purpose of being as efficient as possible.

If you want, ill take out the 32GB of ram and leave it with 8Gb and you can have it for £200.

I've decided to go down the custom Haswell route. I'll withdraw my interest. Good luck with the sale!
