Stars! The other half was watching some Delia Smith programme (7:30, Monday) and I got dragged into it while eating dinner. I almost choked at the amount of salt Delia liberally sprinkled over every dish she threw together (both before and after the cooking). Was she serious?

I fear for her blood pressure.

I'm sure some people do themselves more harm by worrying about what they eat, than the harm the food does in the first place.

I think it's sensible to not eat too much salt. However, most people get too much salt from fast-food and convenience meals: if you make meals in a more traditional way, then you at least know what you're eating. It's also a lot cheaper, and tastier.

I agree that if you do cook your own meals from scratch, that you don't need to worry too much about what you're putting into it. But salt is a bit of a mad thing to add to everything: that's why you have salt and pepper pots, so you can flavour the meal how you like once it's served! I don't like salt, and it seems weird to me that salt and pepper get added to everything on cookery programmes.

You do if you want them to have a nice crispy shell, salt and oil, well known recipe not a delia smith exclusive.

I don't use any salt in my cooking (except for nice jackets and cooking pasta), yes you can add what you want afterwards.... I do tend to use chillies a lot tho :p

I found if I buy decent spuds from the market, you get a crispy shell anyway!

Have you tried the jars of chopped, pickled chillies? I use them, and 'lazy garlic': it's very convenient, and it means you always have some available in the fridge.

I really like cracked black pepper, but I don't add it to much of my cooking (except curries) as some people don't like it.

Frankly I'm indifferent (except on chips, when it's mandatory) but Delia went bonkers with the stuff! Evidently she likes some potato with her salt.

[BTW, is anyone's post counter frozen like mine appears to be?]

I've noticed a lot of chefs put salt and pepper in before they even taste what they are cooking

Yeah, but you wouldn't add the ketchup before cooking the chips, would you?
