    Hi all,

How do I know if a thread has been deleted ? Was looking for the thread started by GaryD about what we like best about the forum, but can't find it. Is there a list of deleted threads somewhere (with reason for deletion) ??

No, there is no such list. They are just not available.

You could search Yahoo! or Google to see if they have cached them

This seems to be a no go area. See my innocent enquiry here :-

    http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=230577

and the subsequent non specific reply.

I keep expecting someone to sidle up to me and mumble out of the corner of his mouth in a south american accent
"There are somethings it eez better not to ask senor"

AFAIK threads don't generally get deleted but are moved out of public view.

Your so called non specific reply was "they are removed and archived elsewhere." How much more specific did you want it to be

I would have liked you to have addressed my specific question:-
"Can members ask for total removal? "
and my follow up question :-
Why are some dead threads left (to clog up the system) but the two threads I gave details of were active the same day but then disappeared, seemingly, for no reason.

As I previously said "I am only curious :) "

Just an idear, but reasons for the certain posts being deleted might be good so as people know that the subject/item/news/converstion ect is now out of bounds and dont post on the subject anymore.
That would then stop members posting threads that are likley to cause offense or be against the rules in the first place and save a lot of time and effort being wasted in there deletion. What do you all think?
    Dave :)

Very few threads or posts are deleted and invariably when they are, most people will know why as the reasons are usually self evident. Posting the reasons for deleting a thread would be self defeating as then everyone would feel that they had a right to express their opinion on whether it should have been deleted or not.

After the 'What Part' thread disappeared I've become somewhat distanced and disappointed and didn't drop in anywhere near as much yesterday.

Don't get me wrong I'm 47, not some teenager, and It's none of my business what Stuart, or any of the mods, do or don't do with threads, and I don't know what happened after my posts for it to be pulled, but after reading the rules again it does seem that they need to be more clearly defined. I'm against censorship I really do believe most people can see plain sense and have the ability to realise when they are going too far and stop. But there is always going to be a minority who ruin things for the majority.

I personally have never seen anything on here which in my opinion has gone too far, but I don't read every post, every day.

If it's getting to the point where freedom of speech is getting things pulled because someone doesn't like it and yet it isn't deemed offensive then it's a sad day for a forum that i found to be friendly and open.

Idoexist (Paul, first time i've put my name on here as i'm not hiding on this subject)

One of the reasons for that is that it's the job of a Moderator to get rid of a lot of posts before they cause offence or before anyone clicks on a dodgy link :)

This will be my only comment on this thread (except for the more light hearted one on page 1)

I would like too comment but i wont. I've had a little exchange with stuart privately and i think we reached some kind of understanding - i certainly think he understood where i was coming from and i understand him.

however, this subject will do one of two things - it will either peater out and become nothing or it will reach a point of critical mass and affect change on these boards.

I think that various events over the last couple of weeks and the last 72 hours have been very sad for both the members and the admin team.

i wont post on here again - unless i'm asked too and without fear of retribution. I love this forum i have said so before and i will say so again. I am its biggest fan - i believe i'm the only person to start a thread publically thanking the admin team for there hard work and that was only about a month ago.

Talking of deleted threads and posts. I would just like to point out that although I understand the reasons behind some of my posts being delelted recently, I was quite upset by it considering that I had put a bit of work into them. I am over it now of course , but at the time, it was quite unsetteling.
    :)

I was also worried about posting this little message incase it caused any trouble. Should I really be feeling this way?

No. If a forum member wants to delete a post there's a field available to provide a reason (which presumably only the mods can see along with the original post).

I don't think a similar field would be out of place which automatically sent the original poster the reasoning via PM for when mods delete a post. Obviously a "mods decision is final" clause could be appended to it but at least some of us would know what we've done wrong.

If I delete a post I usually try and send a PM saying why it's been done, but in most cases it's not necessary :) The other day I had to delete 6 or 7 posts from someone who kept answering "Not too sure" or "Don't know" to threads in the DVD Recorder section, now I don't think a reason was needed there :D

I posted in that thread, and I've got to say I found nothing offensive with Stuarts original. I just stated that as I believed in a 'greater force', a God if you want, that I thought it was pointless to compare the two. i didn't think it caused any offence to myself, and so decided not to vote.

I was surprised it was pulled, and perhaps even more surpised to find it back slightly altered.

It's down to the individual, and you can't please, or offend, everyone all the time.
