I shifted the house around and now have an inpurity patch on my telly.

I've managed to borrow a degaussing wand, and have a few questions.

Should the telly be on or off?

How far away from the tube do you start?

And it's small circles increasing to big circles yeah?

Sorry for being a dullard guys, I should've asked the guy who lent it to me, but he's gone away for the weekend now.

Doesn't matter if the TV is on or off but the effect on the picture when it is on might scare you!

    1. Hold degaussing coil near centre of tube face an inch or two from the face of the tube.

    2. Switch on coil and make increasing circles to cover front face of tube.

    3. Gradually walk directly away from the set while still moving the coil in circles.

    4. Switch off coil when 4-6 feet away.

    5. Repeat if necessary but if it is a small coil it might get rather warm so let it rest for a while.

    Thanks Gary.

Much as I thought, but I'm getting nervous, so just wanted to check.

Don't get too close to start with. Large circles, gradually moving further away. If after a few applications you still have residual magnetism, try getting a little closer in. If you get too close, there is a small risk that you could vibrate the shadow mask (the metal plate behind the screen with the holes in it) off its welds, and you have a f :censored: ed tube.

Don't forget to remove your wristwatch, and keep it away from your credit cards :)

That's very good advice, Nick, although I'm not sure why you felt it necessary to censor the word "failed"!
