I’m going try to chronicle as much as possible of the conversion of my built under garage into a compact dedicated room with a family twist. (edit: I've since decided I'm going to go dedicated probably for the first time in my life and to heck with it lol).

A brief bit of history; I was looking to do some modest upgrades to my lounge cinema:
      https://www.avforums.com/threads/bestÅ-both-worlds-family-lounge-meets-home-cinema.2128866/

When I came across this competition for a media room on the front page of AVforums, being run by @MultiroomMedia :
      https://www.avforums.com/threads/win-a-£20-000-media-room-from-multiroom-media.2125084/

Entered the competition, and a few days later had a rather surreal phone call from Ben telling me that I’d won!

Once I managed to calm down a bit (took a couple of days, not quite sure I’m totally there yet) I started thinking about all the glorious kit I could upgrade my planned upgrade with… and actually felt pretty flat about it as it just seemed a bit “more of the same” without really giving me anything much more than I had.

I’d previously considered my garage, but concluded it was a bit too small to justify spending the money, partly due to keeping space for the boiler, partly due to what I wanted to achieve and the funds available. Now, with an influx of prize fund for kit and expertise, I could divert my own funds to moving the boiler out, gaining valuable space and making a nice little room feasible it the space I had. Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!

Things are still pretty fluid; I’ve only just started talking to builders and figuring out all the requirements, as I’d really only given the garage the most minimal of consideration in the past. We're all as a family really looking forward to the finished result already.

I'll reserve the next couple of posts for info about the finished build, useful links, etc. Hope you enjoy reading the thread.

House is a 3 storey townhouse with built under garage. Plan of ground floor as below, with salient points of conversion noted. We want to keep storage at the front of house for bikes and tools etc:
      AnotatedPlan.png

This is what the garage currently looks like. A little bittersweet about losing the workshop, but to be honest I'm hardly ever in there these days.
      IMAG0171.jpg

First idea for garage conversion before win was as follows, but the pitch of the seats was crazy cramped; and really on discussion with the family we could really do with some way of having extra sleeping capacity somehow (dull I know)
      Screen Shot 2017-10-22 at 23.18.28.png

Extending the room helped to be able to accommodate a sofa bed; but this meant the prime seats would be an unconfy sofa bed made up as a sofa :(
      Screen Shot 2017-11-14 at 22.57.44.png

A better option would be a corner sofa bed to open up the room a bit, with the sofa-only section being used as the main seats and the sofa bed section just for aux seating "cheap seats" :)
Found a nice sofa from Willow and Hall which looks like it will do the job nicely (The Minety 7 Seater Modular Sofa Bed | Willow & Hall)

      Screen Shot 2017-11-14 at 23.01.45.png

I know the corner sofa will cause some gasps and shouts of sacrilege; however our family really are more of a horizontal lying on each other kind of rabble rather than a sitting up bunch; and in getting some sleeping option in there it really adds loads of extra value to us as a family.

Had a really useful meeting yesterday at @MultiroomMedia 's Marlow base with Ben, Chris and Neil, top bunch of guys. Chris took some piccies which maybe Ben can share one or two here. Unfortunately they didn't have the comically large cheque to present me with! :p

Loved their dedicated room setup, very swish and comfortable with great sound and picture, but seeing it and measuring up really confirmed to me that the room just isn't big enough for two rows of seats to not feel very cramped. It worked really well in their room, but it was quite a big bigger than mine in every direction.

We spent 3 hours covering various aspects of the build. At the moment my main consideration is trying to sort out builders etc in a sensible timescale - most builders round these parts seem very busy in the lead up to Christmas. Although the sofa corner makes the room a bit multipurpose, I'm keen for the room to remain nice and dark and we discussed the option of fabric coverings for the surfaces, and trying to tie in the building regs WRT to thermal with sound proofing.

We did spend some time covering kit. Projection is a given. I really want an AT screen as this is one of the things I really covet after having an ALR screen in the lounge, and really would like to have a correctly masked image at 2.4:1 etc. We discussed speakers, which will quite possibly end up being built into the screen wall for LCR (possibly sub too). Surround speaker placement and selection is a little bit entertaining due to the sofa positioning, but the guys had some ideas for interesting solutions to get the best possible results.

We also discussed a bit the most logical divisions of labour between local builders and their specialists.

Next steps are to start putting some meat on the bones of the plan for the guys, while I carry on evaluating the various builders around here to try and find a good fit for the job.

Subscribed, looking forward to this. Finding builders is a pain, the good ones are always booked up.
I’m in Norfolk too, there’s not many AV fans around here.
I am thinking about an extension for a home theatre next year. My space will be a similar size to yours so I will be pinching lots of ideas.

      Congratulations - it's a great prize.

When you start decommissioning your workshop, give me a shout - I'm in the process of doing exactly the opposite of you (building a workshop in my garage) and see lots of useful stuff in that blurry picture ;)

Thanks for starting the thread James.

It was great to have the first meeting at our showroom and start looking at ideas.

A few were easily agreed from both sides, notably that an Acoustically Transparent screen is a must. A solid screen is always a compromise from my point of view, fine in a multifunctional living/media room, but AT every time in a dedicated space.

One thing we'd like to fit into the budget if possible is motorised masking. We would usually specify constant height with side masks to make a real feature of 2.35 material, but with the limited room width we have to play with, first impressions are that the 16:9 image will be underwhelming when masked down. We've just provided James first draft drawings of an 80inch 16:9 with motorised top/bottom masks.

      Ben

Thanks for all the love peeps. To answer the things mentioned:
You can checkout any time you like, but you can never leave... :) The 3D drawings are my own rushed Sketchup efforts (nothing to do with @MultiroomMedia), and I couldn't be bothered to put them in yet! They're going to be a little annoying to sort because it is a 3 storey house so there are fire doors places you wish there weren't.
Yes, probably no space behind the sofa to the wall so perhaps only .2
Much of it is already spoken for - the benches and the floor went via the classifieds here a week or so ago (being picked up next weekend). The small environmental chamber is going to work, I'll keep the little scope, function gen and probably the bench supplies as they're pretty useful and not that big. A couple of other little bits and pieces may get listed.
I think the guys wish it wasn't quite so "end of the train track" but ho-hum...! :)

Any initial thoughts to what electronics / speakers your going to use?

Thumbs up from me for the corner sofa, I love mine, great for laying out on watching a film [emoji1303]

Yes, it was a little shock. It is just as well the phone call audio didn't work out - mostly it was me just being in disbelief and stunned silence if I recall...

We're knocking around a couple of ideas on electronics, speakers and kit, but it is pretty fluid at the moment. Got a speakers demo lined up in the near future. Until things are a bit firmer I'll resist posting the blow-by-blow here :).

For me much of the most tangible improvement I'm anticipating is going to come from the room setup combined with the kit, rather than just the kit - my current room is a super-compromise (still works pretty well, mind). Here I do think the experience of an installer is very valuable as they've tried lots of combinations of gear in the past in various settings, and know what works and what was a waste of budget. I'm really keen that the room "works" as much as possible, both technically and for us as a family. Hence the corner sofa :)

Congratulations bud! Are you going to jump up from 1080P to 4K?

Thanks:) Well, probably up to fauxK... But more out of availability than anything else, there aren't really any good 1080p units left with electric lenses. My old X30 will move on to pastures new once I've got the garage done, with an upgraded TV in place of the ReAct in the lounge.

Seating distance is probably ending up at ~3m over to a ~2m screen, which should work quite nicely viewing angle wise (I think it is around 37 degrees). But it means the benefit of 4k is only just kicking in from what I see on the various charts.
