Decent Upscaling DVD Player (eg XE1) vs HTPC ?

I tried plugging my PC into my PWD8 last night - and although I couldn't get 1:1 Pixel matching to work (was getting sync errors at 852x480)

have to say I was quite flawed by the smooth and detailed almost totally noise free picture I got at 720p via VGA - using FFDshow etc. Movement was so smooth as I said I was very impressed indeed.

best I'd seen to be honest on my set

so how would that compare to say a XE1 ? Costs between getting a HTPC and a XE1 are similar.

I recently received this player and it is top of the range on DVD playback thanks to the HQV reon chip from silicon optix. It has a range of picture settings like mosquito noise reduction, edge enhancements, but you dont need them as you hardly see noise except when it is a bad dvd.
