Looking for some views from FPS fans please....

Does anyone else feel that the basic 'deathmatch' titles are being killed off?

I've always been in the camp of gamers who just want to quick-start a match and go on a rampage. Felt like that about FPS's ever since the days of Quake. Call of Duty 2 pulled this off pretty well in my opinion. I dont do clans of any sort, just player match - custom game type, deathmatch. (I avoid team deathmatch)

So why am I not enjoying CoD3 multiplayer? Whats with all this team work and stats getting in the way? Why cant I just play a quick simple game of deathmatch? - perhaps I'm being stupid and just cant find the option.

Whats your opinions folks, Straight Deathmatch or Team Work ?

No option for both?

Yesterday i spent most of the day playing Gears online didnt feel like chatting as there was a New Wii in the house and lots of Wii talk going on, so was mainly playing solo with a bit of occasional teamwork, later in the evening i put the headset on to gets some Teamwork going and had a blast again.

So i do both and enjoy both, didnt vote because theres no option for both.

strictly speaking i enjoy both, but if i HAD to choose i go for teamwork. even team deathmatch is better - running around and shooting anything that moves seems to be a little "simple" for my personal tastes. and, as ive said before, my benchmark for online games has always been the experience of playing a 25 vs 25 match of class based battlefield 1942. having specialised tank killing squads, or house clearance squads, with specific weapons for the job was great - especially when it worked!

im really enjoying the co-op modes with gow and r6v too - a lot more than i expected. lets hope more titles decide to include these options

I enjoy a bit of both but prefer straight deathmatch.

Some points that bother me about most recent shooters;

1, lack of post game lobby......... Cod 2 was slated for it when it was released and was eventually sorted out with a patch, so why are game developers still producing games without a post game lobby? FEAR is great fun online but after every match you have to re-invite everyone. Apparently Lost planet is the same, and gears is the same in ranked games.

2, achievements for ranked games only....... GOW is an awful experience in ranked yet its the only way to get the achievements. Guess I won't be getting most of them then.

3, as mentioned in the topic, deathmatch seems to be disappearing. Gears would be great in straight or team deathmatch. First to 20 kills, it would be mayhem!

4, Lack of different weapons and alt fire modes.......Unreal tournament on pc remains my favourite for weapons.

5, ALL games should let you completely remap the controller layout, god knows why most games don't allow this lately. The biggest problem for me is when trying to melee, running around trying to whack someone means you can't aim as well......its all very clumsy. Melee'ing with a shoulder button would seem to make far more sense. Also all the lefties who rightly complain about being forgotten about would be able to arrange the controller to best suit them.

I used to prefer straight forward deathmatch but after getting my first taste of Rainbow Six: Raven Shield a couple of years ago im starting to prefer team based matches. Im loving GOW at the moment but i dont think theres a lot of strategy in team death matches but is still great to play.

Thanks for that Munkey, i'll keep that in mind for future. Wont be starting a new thread as the comments are more interesting than the poll results so far...

Kevlar : Totally get your point about GoW. I bought it on launch day and so far only played it for about 20mins. It's on my list of things to do.. To be honest, everyone claiming its best played with Team Work - does put me off slightly.

I'm a lefty myself, but never really felt the urge to remap my controls. Perhaps I'm just used to using the defaults for everything !

Straight deathmatch for me. I don't ever talk to anyone over Live that isn't a mate, so I never really fancy playing team deathmatches. Have thoroughly enjoyed some straight DM in Prey, Perfect Dark Zero and Quake 4.

Same as me buddy - I've got 4 people on my buddies list, 3 of which I've never even spoken to.

I do enjoy a good deathmatch, but when you have two even sides in a team game it takes some beating.Played COD 3 last night in a 8 per side team battle the final score was 100 to 99.GREAT FUN.

deathmatheces are the best. Used to play cod on the pc for ages to join a random server pick a gun and go rambo on the server. Its so fun as you don't have all the boring waiting and teamwork. Its just one man with his gun then when you get bored you hop servers.

So if they invite you to a game or you invite them to a game you all just sit there in silence without even saying hello then eventually just silently leave?
Whats the point of having them as buddies then?

They are just random people who send a friends request after a game finishes - I have no desire to speak to random folk really ;)
