My huge mutha of a CRT Sony appears to have bitten the big one.

Despite a few "reset" attempts, I just can't get a picture.

Strange thing is, the Stereo A/B indicator LEDs on the front of the set appear to be trying to talk to me. They are flashing in a repeated pattern.

One of 2 patterns depending upon how I try to switch on the TV.

Either; A once followed by B thirteen times

or..... A once followed by B three times.

    Anybody any ideas ??

I now inform you that your tv is dead.

My feelings, as usual, is that you´ll need to send it to be serviced.

13 flashes happens a lot on faulty Sony's... trouble is I can't quite recall which error it's reporting...

I have a sneaking suspicion it can be due to failed line output drive (either the lineoutput transformer or the lineoutput transistor)... but a dry joint could equally cause this fault... and depending on the age, dry joints on Sony's aren't that unusual like most TVs (bar Panasonics perhaps)

I think you really need a repair man to check out the TV to give an accurate diagnosis, but the less than technical way to establish whether it's a dry joint, is to... umm give the TV a little bash (gently) and see if it comes to life. If it does then dry joints are likely and not too expensive to have fixed...

A failed Line o/p transformer however can be costly, maybe looking at £120 - £150 in total.

13 flashes indicates the voltage protection circuitry has activated.
Can be caused by a range of probs, but many times by dry solder joints. 3 flashes varies from chassis to chassis, don't know it for yours.

    They're picking it up tomorrow.

They can sort out the NTSC problem while they're at it. I've got a dozen R1 DVDs that I wanna watch.
