    Though I believe there are presently no machines on the market (UK) which can record a disc c/w 5.1 sound. Is it possible to do it on a PC ?

    Actually all DVD recorders can record in AC3 - they just can't accept a 5.1 input. You can certainly go down the PC route - I suggest looking for advise on this subject in the HTPC forum (found listed on the front page of this site) though as you'll get better advise there.
