    Hi guys
I recently got a new Sony DVD player (dont remember the model but it does have built in 5.1 decoding). I need to get a surround amp/reciever but am a little confused!

Will I need an amp OR a reciever? I am a little unsure about the difference between the two, or arethey both simply diferent terms for the same thing?

With that in mind could anyone recommend a cheapish (sub £250) model for my setup? It should be slimline due to space restrictions and also black if possible, to match the DVD/VCR/TV.

    Any help would be appreciated.

You will need an amp or a receiver. A receiver is an amplifier with a radio built in, thats all.

As regards recommendations, I'm a little out of touch with the price range quoted so I will leave that to others.

Thanks for this info. One further question... is it possible that some DVD players dont actually NEED an amp at all? I only ask this because I have seen a few "one box" solutions lately (such as Samsungs entry level HT-DL70) which don't appear to have an external amp at all but do support 5.1/6.1. Is it possible that my Sony player may be able to simply accpet surround speakers natively? Sorry if this is a stupid question :)

No mate, you WILL need an amp as your DVD player won't amplify the signal alone. Some like the Samsung are DVD-and- amp-in-one. Check out a Yamaha 430 for a good full size box or perhaps Pioneer VSXC300 for a great slim-line amp & half-price @£149 at Richer Sounds!!!!

I did look at the Pioneer and thought it looked like the sort of kit Ineeded and at a good price too. OK thanks for this - I'll try to get a demo.
