    Hi all,

Quick question - is it possible to upgrade my DAVS550 unit to a seperate amp/receiver, but still use the sony speakers?

(they have a propietary plug connector - can I just cut it off and connect them the new amp/receiver?)

    Thanks,

There have been a few threads about this lately, your speakers will plug in alright, just cut the connector off and plug it in bare wire directly. But for the amp side you'll need some specs of the speakers, are they 6 or 8 Ohms (or even 4) what are the reqimented wattage, peak and norminal. Not all of these will be on the speaker or maunal but hopefuly some of it will be.

What are you looking for in an amp and what is your budget, if you want help selecting an amp.

Thank you for the response - much appreciated. I'd looked for threads on this - but obviously not very well!

I'm looking for an amp that has:

    Dolby 5.1
Optical digital in (for xbox / xbox 360)
    (RCA) component in (x 2)
    s-video in
    (RCA) Component out
s-video up conversion (so I can plug in my sony HC42 miniDV camcorder and get the signal via component cable to my Panny PW7 plasma's component board).

Oh ... and in silver would please the Mrs!

p.s. For £1.99 would please the Mrs. too

Any midrange yamaha or denon amp should full fill your connectivity desires and upconversion to component.

Your looking at £300 for these amps usualy i think upconversion starts at the 657 and up but it might be on the lower ranges too.

From the DAVS550 user manual ....

    Fronts/rears/centre : 80W, 4 Ohms@1kHz, THD 10%
    Sub: 100W, 3 Ohms@100Hz, THD 10%

    Any problems with that?

As its 80W at 4 ohms it should be ok for most amps (i suspect thats the specs of the amp but it'll extent to the spakers too), if you can afford it I would suggest you go for the yamaha 657 or even better the 757. Is the sub powered or is it powered via the all in one? if the latter you will probably not be able to use it as most amps only have a phono out and not a powered section for a sub (although you can hook them via the front speakers ect..)

I will be supprised if you don't upgrade the speakers in time though, as with a mid range amp they will be probably hold them back, but no more than a cheap 5.1 set would anyway.

OK ... a few months passed since I opened this thread ... and I've still got my DAVS550. More of an incentive to change now though ... so more advice/thoughts required!

I still want to replace the unit but keep the speakers (Mrs. won't let me get any new/bigger ones!).

    Core requirements:
3 x component in (xbox 360, TVDrive, DVD player)
3 x optical in (same again)
    1 x s-vid in (for Camcorder)
    1 x component out (to Panny PW7)
1 x s-vid out (to Panny PW) OR up conversion to component.
Ability to drive a passive (not powered) sub.

    Nice to haves:
2xHDMI in, 1 out - would give path for other equipment upgrades
RGB scart in - just in case.

Anyone know an amp that could do the above for around £200? (second hand probably!)

Also - worth worrying about HDMI now? Or do I ignore and worry about that when I replace the PW7 (at least 2 years!)

    Dez
