chatting to Druss & waylander.

Hi Simon,

Any update on Waylander?

not yet, he is on the back burner for a bit while I wait for materials to arrive. So am casting up the last batch of Axeman figures while I wait. Still not entirely happy with the proportions on this one too, heseems to be cursed and a bugger to get right, 😡

will post an update when I’ve made a bit more progress. If you wanted a Skillgannon I now have the parts to make another one too.

stay healthy and safe all.

It’s been a busy time in the shed, managed to finish my Waylander build, also kinda went back to the drawing board with Jianna, decided that I wanted a more “warrior queen” vibe

Proof copy of Legend GN along with signed limited edition HB & signed paperback.

Never seen the Proof copy before.

On the hunt for more.

What a great find, and I’m the last person to comment t on Gemmell related paraphernalia addiction. 👍

I just picked up a signed copy of the paperback legend graphic novel from world of books. Wasn’t listed as signed so was a nice surprise

On another note I have not seen the hardback, where can these be found and is there an isbn which is related the hardback ?

I don't have the hardback myself so I can't check the ISBN, but from what I've seen, the majority that come up for sale are in the US so I suspect they were mainly sold there at first.

Good find Jimbo. Another one for Steven's wall eh? It is too much for me, especially as I wasn't a massive fan of the art on the book. Strangely it looks much more impressive in its original art form, but I gather Les Edwards' KBTG also did.

hah not this one. It’s the one DG set i really don’t like. I hate the treatment of the female lead. Nothing about the work speaks to me and It’s the only pair I’d never go back to read. It actually stopped me from reading him for a few years as I really disliked it so much haha...

if you ever get to Sweden, come by the house, I’ll show you KBtG live and you can see just how wonderful it is in it’s full form. Gorgeous.

Thanks for the offer Steven, KBtG in the flesh would certainly be a sight to behold.
On the Hawk Queen duology, I remember your comments on the interview you did of an unusually jaded DG at the time. He definitely did the right move changing his publisher as we never saw a nadir (hehe) in his work like that again. From Deathwalker to Troy, he went from strength to strength.
The DG Facebook site had a 'World Cup of all his books, starting with pools of 4-5, before entering the knock out rounds. Unsurprisingly The Hawk Quuen books, along with his crime and the Arthur pairs filled out most of the bottom. It is noteworthy that they all came from his two low points, after being fired and, as mentioned above, having lost faith in his publisher.

Weirdly, I adore Last Sword and Ghost King. I read them parallel to Stephen Lawhead’s Taliesin and Merlin and loved that GwalchmAI was central to both... so when I wrote Coldfall Woos and had a scene in the druidic otherworld it felt only natural to have a homage to DG with Gwalchmai leading lost roman soldiers in the mist...

Nice tribute. Yeah, despite the low ranking in the World Cup, I have always had praise for Ghost King. Last Sword probably would be higher in my esteem if he hadn't seemingly rushed the climax and made Wotan more interesting a villain. He was not a patch on the depth of Goroien (and Gilgamesh) and she even had the audacity to gate crash his party in the second boom. To be fair, the only book I am not likely to re-read more than once is Rhyming Rings, and that is because I have never been a fan of the serial killer thriller genre.

On the Hawk Queen, I agree that Sigarni was his least well-written primary character, but the second book is more palatable and additionally contains interesting lore about the time/multiverse travelling gates that links all his books together, maybe worth revisiting that one?

I have real problems with first book, for sure.

books I want to reread, Great Song, Dark Moon, and Winter Warriors. These are the tree I’ve only read once, and I just remember Great Song seeming nothing like a normal DG when I read it. Enough time has gone that I don’t remember much excepr a ziggurat haha.

Currently I’m plotting out a new Trudvang novel and just have just sold a story to a swords and sorcery anthology that I hope will kick off a new series... and its a pure DG story haha

I hadn't read Winter Warriors since its release until very recently oddly enough. I loved it as much this time as the first. It has a really creepy vibe near the start that I haven't noticed in his other books so much. The second half then has many great moments and a fantastic climax; I am sure you won't be disappointed when you get back to it. Dark Moon is one I haven't read in a long time, so it might be time for a re-read soon.

I'll keep a look out for your swords and sorcery anthology story... does the anthology have a name yet?

Not an ARC a review copy, there’s a difference, arcs back then would basically have been a manuscript spiral bound. This is just one of the original print run sent out for review. The with compliments slip in it would quote possibly not have been glued in when it was sent out but tucked inside the fly. Some may have been glued in, depends on how Hutchinson did it I guess. Still a very nice find. I mean wonderful condition. Wonder what he paid for it? I’m still trying to find a nice Waylamder.
