It might be a bit of a wait but I'm especially looking forward to Scanners

"Independent British distributors Second Sight Films have revealed that they are preparing Blu-ray releases of David Cronenberg's The Brood (1979), starring Oliver Reed, Samantha Eggar and Art Hindle, and the three Scanners films: Scanners (1981), Scanners II: The New Order (1991), and Scanners III: The Takeover (1992).

Exact technical specs and supplemental features to be included with these upcoming releases are unknown at the moment. However, the distributors have indicated that they should be available on the market in late 2012/early 2013

Both essential for my collection, Had the German BD of Scanners but the quality was woeful, Hopefully SS won't be licensing from Koch!

Any Cronenberg is a must have for me.

Anyone had experience of and can comment on the German BD of Scanners?

Todd?

Sorry, I haven't seen the German BD of Scanners. I have to admit that I'm not that big a fan of Cronenberg's films prior to The Brood. I find them full of interesting ideas, but too emotionally remote for me to really warm to.

I keep going back to The Brood though and it's one of my favourite horror films of all time. Of his 70s films it's the only one that has characters I can empathise with and it's by far the best plotted of his films until then. I find its central idea of "psycho-plasmatics" brilliant (far more so than the telekinesis/path premise of Scanners), I love its chilly, wintery atmosphere and it has several great set pieces. The scenes of "the brood" attacks are still very effective and disturbing now, as are it's monsters.

I realise that Scanners is the film which introduced many to Cronenberg thanks to the then notorious exploding head scene, but after that moment, the film really trails off and follows around one of the dullest leading men ever. I find The Brood a far more sophisticated and satisfying horror film. Cronenberg said it was his Kramer vs Kramer, as the inspiration for the film was his own bitter divorce and to me it does feel a much more personal and emotionally engaging film, than the ones he had made up to then.

I've never watched The Brood, I didn't realise it was a Cronenberg film. The only I've watched before Scanners is Rabid.

As I mentioned in post #3 the German BD was awful, Most certainly an upscale. It's been on HDTV a few times and looked vastly superior to the BD so there is a HD transfer out there which I hope SS will be utilising.

The Brood's a firm favourite too - Cronenberg's first unequivocal success in my estimation - but I do enjoy Shivers for its black humour and charmingly crude execution! Rabid - not so much...

+1 for The Brood. Found it genuinely disturbing when I first saw it on its original cinema release. It really pushed the envelope at the time for graphic horror. Would put it in my top three Cronenberg films.

Scanners was my first experience in home cinema viewing ( well if you can call it that top loader VHS and a CRT tv ) with Alien as a double bill.I remember Michael ironside stole the show as the baddie always does I wonder what I'd think of it now? been a while but did leave an impact.

I watched rabid the other night...it still has a very cold feel to it and still has that something would like to get it on Blu-ray and shivers to as I only have the dvds.
