My daughter wants to have a digital camera for her 18th birthday. Had a look around and she likes the feel of the Sony CyberShot DSC-H5.

She doesn't like the Panasonic Lumix, Fuji or Minolta equivalents. Can she do better for the money (£288) or are there others to consider?. It's her first decent camera and she does have an eye for some photos so she has more than an interest or a whim

Any help for an anquished father, much appreciated,
    Aitch

When I was looking for a camera for my wife the other week I was trying to decide between the DSC-H5, the Panasonic DMC-FZ7 and the Canon Powershot S3 IS. I gather that those are the three most competitively priced and reviewed "ultra-zooms".

In the end I went for the Canon over the Sony, but only because the external dimensions of the Canon were smaller. I understand that they are both excellent cameras and there's not much to tell them apart.

This review's summary gave the Canon the slight upperhand:

Whereas www.dpreview.com give the Sony the slight upperhand...
