Datacolor SpyderTV - display optimiser ?

Hi Alaric,

This was originaly tested agianst CRTs over on avs IIRC, and when I tried it I found it was more accurate without the LCD filter attached although I haven't tried it against a CRT front projector, only a monitor.

I think it was Jeff that found Dabs were selling them for £182:

This is just the sensor:

I've no idea what software it uses though (for our purposes), but there may be a way to get round that. :)

Spyder2Pro has extra facilities (see ROnes posts on the LCD/DLP forum for SMART calibration), and the software will give you a colour temp reading, but the SpyderTV software only gives you the colour co-ordinates. The Colour temp can be calculated here though:

We'll have a Power Buy up and running in the next week or so - we've still to have a date set for the PAL version of the Datacolor SpyderTV; though we'll have a sample of one at the Scottish Sound and Vision show next month.

We already have a Power Buy on the Datacolor Spyder2PRO studio - though as you'll see we cant do much with the price.

To get a better price on these itesm requires a serious amount of pre orders - 100+ units before the price drops by about a tenner!

If someone wants to use the SpyderTV for the back-door xyY data output we need, and has a copy of DVE or Avia, then they can buy the SpyderTV in the Powerbuy as they won't need the supplied PAL disk. To get the data from the SpyderTV software, you install the supplied software, and then create a new shortcut on the desktop for it, and add /support to the end of the command line:

"C:\Program Files\SpyderTV\SpyderTV.exe" /support

This will give you a larg window that will show the xyY data and that's all we need for projector calibration, combined with this downloadable spreadsheet:

http://www.keohi.com/keohihdtv/isf/michaeltlv/isf_m-tlv_calibrationreport_michaeltlv_v3_page1.html

Here's a link that Paul posted earlier, so have a read of that for more info:

I'm still waiting for the Colorfacts people to produce the shoot-out results for various sesnors, and then we'll know if it will need any corrections for better accuracy. It does seem pretty good when compared to my Colorfacts Trichromat-1 sensor though, with a less than 3% deviation in readings in y, and less than 1% in x.

Hi joe,

The 'special price' is £235 the RRP, however you get a Kodak printer kit, which while may be useful for most people who buy it for studio work, is next to useless for AV work....Maybe if it was bundled with the tripod stand and avia or similar....though most people at this level already have avia + half a dozen other calibration discs...so maybe there is a better all round sweetener if the price can't be lowered.

Dabs on the other hand is £200 for the pro2 or £180 for the TV....which is better for our needs, or is the straight 2 better at £137 ????

They don't make it easy for us :rotfl:

Hello Alaric

I'm beginning to think I'll leave this to the likes of Dabs :)

There's simply not enough margin to be spending many hours trying to work out 'a deal' - at the Dabs price we would make £5.00 per order (assuming we drop the Kodak printer kit).

SpyderTV will include the Tripod adapter - and so too will Spyder2PRO studio!

Best regards

Joe

The TV has the adapter, though you can make them from a modified DVD case.

The base Spyder for £137 doesn't have adequate software for outputting xyY data, and I don't yet know if the Spyder is universal and any Tv or Pro software will work with it. I'm guessing it will though.

Currently the SpyderTV is the cheapest guarenteed method of getting the correct hardware with software, and combined with the KeohiTV spreadsheet should allow calibration to D65 - provided you have Avia (NTSC) or DVE (PAL). I haven't looked at the supplied DVD test patterns yet.

Is this product available anywhere yet in the UK?

If so,where?

Anyone had any experience of using it on plasma TVs

Hello batty

As yet the PAL test pattern disc has not materialised so no stock of SpyderTV has reached Europe.

I think we'll end up with the NTSC Version for now and some way to purchase the PAL test pattern disc when it arrives - mind you I'm never going to sell any anyway seeing Dabs have been 'discounting' the product for the last two months even though its not available as yet :suicide:

Best regards

Joe

Hello all

A quick update to say that the SpyderTV with PAL test disc is now available in the UK (16.11.05).

:hiya: Joe,

Any idea where and how much?

Hello batty

The UK SRP is £199.98 (ex postage) - availability I'll let you add 2+2 to get the relevant answer :)
