Saw Das Boot(R2) for the first time last night - what an amzing film! If you haven't seen this film you owe it to yourself to go buy it right now. Watched in German 5.1 with English subtitles, the film is 200 minutes of pure tension. With a cruel Greek-tragedy ending. The sound mix is also superb. Not over-the-top like many films. There's plenty of rear action but it's always in context.
    Absolutely superb.

Your so right - this is the top sub movie despite the awesome sound on U571 (which I got rid of when I got Das Boot - Mind you I couldnt watch it in the dubbed English as some of the accents were so annoying (German 5.1 & subtitles for me too)

I agree - the atmosphere created inside the sub is incredible and gives you a real feel for what it must have been like. My version is not a flipper, but I have noted that on the back of the DVD case, it says that 'the feature' runs for 200 minutes, yet the original directors cut is 209 minutes according to the Internet Movie Database, and apparently, there is even more time, between 10 - and 20 minutes missing from what what shown in the mini-series...
Certainly the directors cut that was released in Germany ran for 216 minutes ...
Still, not much of a gripe for such an amazing movie...

Possibly due to the frame rate of PAL?

    Hi,

The R1 edition is a flipper disc, because (at the time) Columbia didn't think they'd be able to fit it all onto one dual-layered DVD, without having to sacrifice either picture or audio quality, and remove the extras. Bear in mind, that the film is 200 minutes long, has a DD5.1 soundtrack, and has both a German language and English dubbed audio track! That's a lot to fit in!

Luckily, the situation was rectified for Columbia's first R2 DVD release, hence this is why we are lucky to get a non-flipper release!!! WAHEY!
