What Dark Chip 3 projectors are available today?
From memory, you currently have a choice of
ProjectorDesign Action Model 1 Mark III
Infocus Screenplay 7210
Yamaha DPX1200 (not sure if available in UK quite yet)
In the U.S. they also have the Optoma H79, but I'm not sure if that is coming to the U.K.
More interesting question is whether they are any better than their HD2+ brothers......
According to the Greg Rogers review of the H79, it's producing 2900:1 CR @D65 which is around 500:1 more CR than the standard out of the box H78 I measured recently (I can only get 2702:1 with a filter). It's also producing more lumens in low lamp mode than my H78 in high lamp (with no filters of course)!
So in that respect it does look like quite an improvement. Pity we're not getting the H79 over here though (yet at least).
I got the PD Model ONe MK111 and did upgrade from the MK11.
My oppinion is that the DC3 were worth every penny.. Deeper blacks, less screendoor were the things I noticed at once.
So for my Projector it was worth every penny I spent on the upgrade.
I wonder whether new dark chip will condamn HD2 to be discontinued and when?
When will Texas Instrument stop producing HD2?
DC1, DC2 and DC3 are just processes applied in the making of the chip - the HD2+ chip will be around for a while yet using the DC3 process rather than the older DC2 process.
When 1080 arrives, I would expect 720 to remain for sometime, in much the same way the 480 and 576 DMDs have.
