Hi has anyone got any experience of the new Dali Oberon range of speakers. I currently have the Zensor 5 would the Oberon 5 be a sideways step/is it worth the upgrade.

You are asking a very difficult question. The Oberon 5 did get very good reviews and were rated as the best speaker in their class. But ... that doesn't mean you will like them.

Given that the Zensor 5 are currently about £400/pr and the Oberon 5 are about £700/pr, I would suspect that would be something of an upgrade. But it depends on what you are trying to achieve with the upgrade.

DALI SPEKTOR 6 Walnut Floorstanding Speakers (Pair) - Floorstanding Speakers - AudioVisual Online - UK Home Cinema and Hifi Specialists

Dali Oberon 5 Floorstanding Speakers (Pair) - Superfi

Dali Oberon 7 Floorstanding Speakers (Pair) - Superfi

So, in reality you are moving TWO models up in the range of Dali speakers.

But in the end, only your ears can tell you what you need to know. But I suspect, the Oberon are definitely better speakers than the Zensor, though each individual measures better in a different way.

Best Floorstanding Speaker £500 - £1000

I´ve owned the Dali Zensor 5 before and now I´m looking at the Dali Oberon 1 for a 2.0-setup with an Onkyo A-9010 and a pair of bookshelf-speakers (trying to upgrade from my current Wharfedale Diamond 220, just tried the Klipsch RP-160M but will return them, waiting for a delivery of the Mission QX-2 so they are next in line for a try-out here in our home). I will go and listen to the Dali Oberon 1 in the near future, I can try to also listen to the Dali Oberon 5 and see how they compare to Dali Zensor 5 if you don´t have the ability to listen to them yourself.

I've got zensor 1, Oberon 1 and Oberon 5. I have just done side by side stereo comparison of them and chucked my opinion into another post.

I can hear a difference between the either 1s and the 5s, but honestly it's not double the money. I've not got zensor 5s so can't tell you my opinion in side by side with Oberon 5, but I'd posit:

I think the primary difference is the smc magnet. Specs are otherwise similar. Richer staff told me that zensor and spektor are being finished, Oberon being the base models. From a marketers perspective, you need a reason for your new lowest model to cost more, when really you just want to charge inflation+ prices, which you can't do with a long tooth existing range.

From what I have heard across all of my speakers compared to what I've read about them, they all sound very good for the money, but the 5s aren't double the quality of 1s.

I personally wouldn't spend money on incremental upgrades. This equipment is largely mechanical and I think there's a huge amount of subjective bs and gear fetishism in a field of high margin product.

I think there's a noticeable tonal difference between the Oberon 1 and zensor 1, but listen to either for more than a minute and both are good and fine and then you forget what the difference was.

One day, I'll fork out for a side by side experiment with next order speakers and in the £1250 bracket and reconsider, but only if I can return them!
