Breakthrough loudspeaker technology promised

We've just been sent word of some new loudspeakers from DALI. DALI is a Danish brand we don't hear a lot about, yet, but they're hoping to change all that with the launch of their premium bookshelf speakers, the Epicon 2.

DALI are claiming the Epicon 2 represents a revolution in loudspeaker technology through its unique new Linear Drive Magnet system that they developed to address the four causes of distortion in a loudspeaker's motor system.

They certainly look the part with their high-gloss cabinet and high-grade real wood veneer. The loudspeakers are available in three real wood finishes: Walnut, Ruby Macassar and Black. The Walnut and Ruby Macassar real wood veneer is individually hand-matched by DALI's craftsmen which might just give you the impression these speakers won't be budget affairs.

Epicon 2 is the most diminutive of the Epicon family with book-shelf loudspeaker dimensions and they sit upon custom-made stands. DALI says there will be no need to move them around your room in search of that elusive audio sweet spot, as they are designed to produce a sound stage to fill a room.

DALI apparently spent three years researching and developing the new magnet motor technology and has set-up a separate, purpose-built manufacturing unit in their factory. In this facility the new EPICON drivers are built from scratch – the new magnet systems are assembled; rapid robot glue application is made; meticulous methods are applied to the soft-part assembly and rigorously detailed electro-acoustical testing is implemented. The woofers are the first to be developed and manufactured in DALI's Danish factory. The DALI hybrid tweeter was also developed in-house and the EPICON 2 speakers feature a larger chamber designed to improve damping and a new high frequency wave-guide.

Linear Drive is intended to eliminate four distortion factors in the motor system. Advanced Soft Magnetic Compounds (SMC) used for the individual parts of the magnet system close to the voice coil, in combination with a carefully balanced arrangement of aluminium rings are claimed to eliminate variation of both flux strength in the magnet gap and induction of the voice coil. The SMC material features linear magnetic properties throughout the frequency range and eliminates modulation of the force/current ratio within the motor system. The aluminium rings around the pole piece reduce and stabilize voice coil inductance, independent of excursion. T

I'd like to add to this that i purchased these about a month ago and i'm shocked by how good they are. They replaced some Mentor 5's (floor standers)and you can't tell from the sound that the Epicon 2's are only standmounters from the super low and tight bass response. A big  from me!
