after listening to dab radio for maybe 3 hours or more it starts to distort in the background with a low-frequency popping sound lower in volume than the music but just audible it is on other channels so I know it's the tuner never does it when playing CDs
if I switch to cd then back to dab it goes away
    anyone any ideas

Sounds like poor reception to me. Do you live in an area where reception is poor? Has anybody else got a dab radio you could try to see if something similar happens? Personally I think dab is rubbish although it works ok in my car. I am a big fan of internet radio gives me very few problems.

    Sounds like a faulty radio.
If it was poor reception it would cut out completely or intermittently, not after 3 hours.

Mine used to work for a while and then make that noise. Switch it off and come back in an hour and it would be ok but then would start again.

I thought bad reception would cause complete drop out not background noise
thought it may be a component fault but 3 hours or more seems a long time if something is overheating

Mine used to make that noise on a station with poor reception. Sometimes this would appear after a period of listening or straight away. There was no specific time such as 3 hours. I live in an area with poor dab reception and understood this was the reason. Personally I think dab is rubbish I have no problem with connecting on the fm frequency. Having said this my car has a dab radio and this works almost perfectly.

Bad reception on DAB produces blackouts and silence, poor reception leads to squealing and squelching noises.. and that's just the radio....
