no i havent. it should support ntfs - and does as it reads my 160gb ntfs drive. also reads fat32

if i did format it to ext3/4 whatever, then my pc wouldn't read it and it would be ridiculous copying new files to it.

as it can read the smaller drive, i take it it's a drive incompatability or a size limit - even though it should support upto 2tb drives.

i cant find on sumvisions site though, where the firmware updates are for this model. others yet, but not this one.

It's a strange one alright. I'd try reformatting to FAT32 to see if that helps. If that doesn't work, try a similar size and format if you can get a loan of one from a friend. On paper, it should be working!

It'll probably be a while until they have firmware available for this model as it's only a few weeks old. :(

ahh, thought it had been around for a while.

i',m in the process of moving 1.1TB worth of stuff to another drive, only 5 hours left to go :eek:

then i'll give it a shot. i hope it's the fact that the cluster size is not the norm.

I was thinking of getting one of these.

I had to return a Sumvision MKV enclosure last year as it wouldn't recognise the 1.5TB Samsung HDD that was shipped in it.
Lets hope they have not made the same mistake again, Otherwise I will be stuck with my noisy PC for another year till next christmas

As suggested by Conorino above it seems that this does not output multi-channel sound from any of its 3 ports. The same 2 channel PCM sound is output regardless of the audio track selected - even from the the SPDIF socket. My Yamaha AV amp does not recognise it as DTS or DD and can only find 2 channels of PCM, similar to what you would expect if you just connected via the red and white audio sockets.

This is not what I expected and I cannot understand why the original audio source is being downgraded before being passed out through the SPDIF co-ax port.

Damn. You've confirmed my suspicions! I've also tried a collection of DTS and Dolby Digital "intros" (Ghost Train, DTS Piano, etc from the start of movies) which definitely work with this amp. Alas, to no avail.

I've logged a tech support call with my retailer, UKDVDR, so hopefully they'll have word on when/if a firmware fix will arrive for this problem.

There should be an option under AUDIO to choose between RAW and stereo PCM. Instead there is a simple choice between SPDIF and 'normal' - but with no apparent difference in the the audio that is output. It is not really clear if this is some sort of downmix to 2 channels or if some of the audio is simply missing. This does seem to be a firmware error as I believe that other models using the same chip do give the RAW option when there is a digital port.

Please update if you get any help from UKDVDR as I heard somewhere that there is an immediate firmware update due.

I bought this player last week to use as a storage device for a samsung F4 2TB hard drive, thought video output would be a bonus and didn't cost more than an generic hard drive enclosure. When I tried movie playback was blown away by the visual quality, I was using a PS3 'MKV2VOB; and XBOX360 'Media Centre' with MKV before and have to say this player has far better quality, considering its cost I am very impressed and only use this now. Even compared it to a mates BluRay player and this edged that for quality?! So far it has played every file I have played including over 20GB MKV bluray backups aswell as things like 3gp video from my phone..

The only gripe I have is that it does not output 5.1 on any of its ports, if a firmware update is due hopefully this will be corrected.

This is probably the best value product I have ever bought lol.

Unboxed and looking good so far! Fitted HDD is a Hitachi 7K1000.c 1TB (Twin 500GB platters). Loading up videos and will update with results (and answers to Q's) later tonight. :D
I just bought the exact same Hard Drive today for this, fitted it and I've got the same problem as Tomos. Can't see how it's not seeing my drive if that's the one they fit themsleves.

He actually bought it on my confirmation from reading the instructions that you can plug it straight into the PC to copy files.:thumbsdow

Hope this firmware sorts it out for us this week as I bought 2 and the one I fitted with the internal drive is for my sister's family for Christmas.:lease:

thats rather unfortunate, ive tried two drives in mine and theyre both ok, 500gb hitachi and a 1tb Seagate

my brother has a 1TB seagate with specialised HP firmware from one of his servers @ HP (lol) and that works fine too..

I've bought this for the inlaws and had to format the hard drive first (for the pc to recognise it). Once it was recognised on the pc the Primus picked it up no problem. Guessing that you know what you're doing with installing hard drives and formatting so don't want to risk offence by saying all the basics (I'm not used to these things! so it took me a little while)

I think the thing is brilliant - picture quality is really very good and it does play a wide range of files. My main bug bear is that the main reason i bought it was to put mini dv tapes on from my son when he was a baby - but for some reason it won't recognise these basic AVI files. I really didnt want to have to bother compressing them (did this a while ago on handbrake and drove me mad). So i'm looking for a quicker way - or a better freeware programme that allows you to do it in batches. Anyone got any advice?

Not tried the sound yet - in laws don't have a surround set up so not looked into any of the downmixing etc

The source of my comment is in this thread a few posts above yours. There is no firmware update yet as this is newly released, but the suggestion is that an update is imminent. Sumvision do not seem to openly offer direct support and so things are inevitably vague.

well, the connecting it to the pc part works fine. it's the OS on the enclosure itself that can't "see" the drive to playback from that isn't working

here's hoping it's fixed asap

Quick tip for all owners. When browsing Directories, press the coloured buttons on the remote control to filter by file type.

Red = All media
Blue = Music
Green = Pictures
Yellow = Video

Quite handy! :thumbsup:

for people having issues you are installing the drive, attaching to a pc via usb, parititon it, formating it as ntfs

copying some films over and then unplugging the usb lead. and turing the unit on and off ?

Thanks for the reply - can you check if it will play dts via optical/digital out without downmixing it please?
As that's what I understand it won't do :confused:

Hi Shaunduhast

As confirmed by myself with a Logitech amp and Paul33 with his Yamaha amp above, this player is not currently sending DTS or Dolby Digital bitstreams via its coaxial SPDIF output. A couple of the lads have been told by their retailers that Sumvision expect to release a firmware upgrade very soon, which will hopefully fix this issue. The player is based on a Boxchip F10 chipset and it can pass digital signal. That's why they fitted the coaxial port in the first place. It's in their interest to fix this ASAP so I can't imagine it'll be too long before it's resolved.

As far as other value players go, I was going to get an Eaget X5 before I saw this. Same chipset and performance with a similar (good) remote control. I chose the Cyclone Primus because it will hide the HDD internally and 3.5" HDDs are much better value capacity-wise (not to mention faster) than USB portables, which you'd probably want to use if going with the Eaget X5. Then again, with a USB portable HDD you've got some nice pocket-sized storage for your movies. All down to personal preference really.

Hope this helps!
Conor

My amp only had HDMI inputs so can only test it via that for pass through.

For the price, I can not fault it, quick and cheap. And since storage is cheap its ideal for a kids bedroom or none technical people.

If you want LAN, TrueHD audio etc, pay more and dont be so tight.

already tried that. works with a 160GB drive, not with a 1.5TB drive

This obviously does not offer LAN and TrueHD cannot be streamed via SPDIF anyway.

However the chip used should allow the SPDIF to pass through basic DD and DTS but limitations in the software of this unit are preventing this. What is the point of including a CO-AX output if it is only passing out the same processed sound as is also available from the stero output or the limited HDMI?

Nor is it clear how the sound is being processed at present where the source is multichannel rather than simply straight stereo. It does not sound right to me.

I agree that this unit is a great bedroom unit if solely connected to a TV via HDMI, but then why increase the size and provide the extra funcionality ports and then effectively disable them again in software?
