    Hi,

Been tracking my new HD-DVD layer and it is now at customs being charged. I take that mean they are charging me for importing ? or does that mean they are reviewing item to see if it should be charged ?

If I do get charged custom duty any Idea how much it will be ??

Customs charges is a bit of a dark art - there's the theory and then the reality.

But in theory customs is split into two bits - Import Duty (ID) and VAT. ID is calculated from the type of item your are importing. There is a very long list but I think a DVD player from the US is 14%. So the declared value of your item plus its shipping cost get ID of 14% added. Then 17.5% of that total is added for VAT.

If you item was £300 (inc shipping) then in theory you could pay an extra £102 or somewhere between this and £0 in TAX.

If it's DVDWorldUSA then you can claim back charges, so I wouldn't worry!

But if it was anyone else, then ouch :(

I didn't know about the import duty bit Avi mentioned as any parcel I have got stung on it always seems to be 17.5% added on and thought this was always the case for personal stuff.... although I have never imported electrical goods so there may be import duty to be added.

Just so you know whats coming as that looks like a parcelforce thing there will also be a handling charge fee from them of £13.50 if its express mail from the us or £8 if its regular airmail.... with the times given looks like express to me

Looks like you are being charged though and the next or next or probably the next  line in tracking will be at your local depot and the tracking event saying held. You will then get a letter from PF stating what you have to pay and how to pay it...... I'd normally just goto the depot as its not far from me.... but just check its there as I have got the letter before the parcel got to the local depot before but it normally seems to be the other way around as it should be

Import duty varies by item based on its clasification.

Wasn't doubting you Avi as I said I have never imported electrical stuff. :smashin:

I have been to that HMRC site before and to be honest just got lost in all the legal type mumble jumble but thank you for the other link as I did find it educational and interesting

What I would normally import would fall under Statuettes or Toys both of which can be 0 or very little duty rate and just vat to pay. (guess so far I have been luckyish)

But I will agree fully with you when you said there is a theory and reality..... all you can calculate and expect is the maximum you have to pay but as you said it can be anything less

The only fee you can be sure of, which was what I was meaning to add to the thread and not discount what you had added, is the Parcelforce clearence fee I mentioned ontop of any duty or vat..... it says about it somewhere on parceforce's website as you would probalbly agree this can be a bit of a pain when you are only charged £4 or £5 for vat but have another £13.50 added ontop just so they can charge and get money from you  although it wont be quite as significant in this case its still a fee to be added on

    Hi Gam

Didn't take it that way just thought the other info was usefull anyway. I recently got charged about £4 VAT on a couple of HD-DVD's and a further £5 by Royal Mail for clearance on a value of about $58. Yet I wasn't charged anything for bringing in my A1. Go figure...

it should be at the depot tomorrow when it will say held at tracking event
you will/should get a letter through the normal post either tomorrow or wednesday telling you its there and how to pay.

If you (understandably) cant wait for the letter and the tracking says its at your local depot just take your tracking number to the depot and they should be able to get you it and then pay for it as they wont release it untill its paid for.... done this once and it took a minute or two after telling them it was there according to the online tracking but was able to get it ok. Or alternatively give them a ring tomorrow on 08708501150 and you should be able to pay for it over the phone to free it up for delivery on wednesday:clap:

    Good news

Spoke to person at parcel force and paid my customs duty £31.25. Didn't want to ask any details about it as I thought it was cheap for what I'm getting LOL

    Happy with that ;)

Thanks for all you replies and advice

    Cheers

I have just ordered a Logitech Harmony 1000 over the net. It came to 200 quid, but if I am gonna get stung for anything up to £70 them i'll be gutted. If I is that much, could I refuse to accept it?

Sure, but you won't get much of your £200 refunded after all the fees you will have to pay

When I ordered it they weren't available in the UK. Now it looks like i'll be paying a tidy sum over the odds for one from the US. Bloody typical.:suicide:
