Sounds like a bunch of naff companies known for bad customer service and over expensive trying to save each other from going under and dissapearing.

Cool, means I only have to walk past one store front now not two!

Interesting move. Haven't Carphone Warehouse already been burned over the BestBuy debacle? I would have thought they would steer clear of a similar venture.

When Best Buy launched it was in a market that still had Currys and Comet.

Now it's just Currys, so a much different proposition for Carphone Warehouse to merge with them. They're desperate to sell more mainstream technology and nothing better than a high street monopoly for that!

not sure what DSG get out of this, surely phones4u who they already partnered with won't be best pleased if this happens

Either way I'm not too fussed, neither shop is exactly known for it's customer service

Makes no odds to me as I'd never shop at any of them.

I can't see this actually happening when push comes to shove. The cultures of the two firms are too different. CPW use very aggressive sales tactics and PC World don't actually have anyone on the shop floor at all (and sometimes no-one on the tills either!)

Perhaps CPW should merge with Tesco instead and try to sell you a 100-carrot/month contract when you go in for a cabbage.

I beg to differ, our local currys has very aggressive staff when I want to look around, however when I want to buy something your description is more accurate

My experience is that Currys has a decent number of assistants, but PC World is a dystopian landscape devoid of human presence. However I don't find Currys staff particularly aggressive. They can even be helpful! CPW on the other hand is a battleground: customer versus sales force; two submissions or a knockout to decide.

That would explain it, they merged them in to one store here and we get the worst of both staff teams it seems. They also put a phones4u in the corner for the more aggressive sales team if you wander too far in their direction. Still it beats comets approach around here that was lets demo every stereo at once with different music on full volume, and they wonder where they went wrong

That's what it seems like to me aswell. My two local stores have merged into combined Currys and PC World.

Was there a couple of weeks ago looking at tablets - I needed some help, looked around and there was no-one. Eventually, I managed to collar one - she was pleasant, but said she didn't know and went off to find someone. We stood like lemons at the display for 15 minutes waiting for someone before we gave up and left.

I don't share the unilateral hatred of the stores that some seem to display though. I think it you know what you are buying they are very useful shops and I would hate to lose them. For example, last thursday, my wife rang me to say that our old tumble dryer had packed up (caught fire) and we needed a replacement. Checked that Currys price was reason, reserved online thursday night, picked up first thing Friday morning and installed is less than an hour later. Total downtime 9pm to 10am (13 hours, the vast majority was night time) can't beat that for convenience.

      Cheers,

      Nigel

I prefer to look at things before buying them when it comes to white goods etcetera so would be a shame to lose them, but I'm not aware they are struggling with their UK stores.

I 'm sure this will be a blow for phones4u as I would guess they will lose out... Not that they offered any compelling deals.

PCWorld / Currys I have had some good service for faulty goods and helpful assistants. Useful for some things and can be competitive on price.

The staff training is variable with some better than others which goes for carphone warehouse.

No retail store offered a decent deal when I needed a new phone recently and I'm sure this change will not improve that.

There is also the age of the customer to consider, many older people will never shop online and just pay whatever the retail giants charge and that is a growing customer base.....

It was mentioned in the press a while ago that the Currys group was closing some stores and some were closed and some changed to currys/pcworld stores. So further consolidation is an expected strategy.

I think its disappointing that there is little competition for this area of the market in the retail sector.
A monopoly is not good for the customer.

Echoing some of the comments above. PC World is an odd shop, I can't say it any better than to quote Nick above who said it was a 'dystopian landscape devoid of human presence'. If you can find a staff member then you are very lucky. Currys on the other hand has loads of them but none of them have even a tiny bit of knowledge of what they are selling. All they are interested in is the extended warranty and cables, they will make up anything to get you to buy add ons.

I'd disagree on that point. Many older people now are perfectly computer literate. Perhaps the 'OAP' of 10 years ago, but a lot now can find their way around a computer with no problem and this will only increase as time goes on.

Exactly what nheather said it's what happens in ours, I tried to buy a tablet as it was a dsg exclusive and had to hunt someone down. We also went to buy a camera and the 2 assistants we talked to ran off to find the keys, 15 minutes after the second one had gone I ordered from amazon instead and it turned up the next day.

I can't blame them for merging stores though, people aren't exactly spending a fortune at the moment and when there's a small curry's on one side of the road and a huge PC world on the other you question the need for both. I do hope that the rumours of Ebuyer opening shops comes true just to add some competition to the market, especially if they train their staff to know what they are selling

I don't know about customer service – I rarely need it – but have you looked in Currys/PC World lately? On some products their prices match the usual suspects. And unlike some they employ local people and don't resort to chicanery to avoid paying taxes.

Spot on there. Older people are also often a bit more savvy, and less naive, than the younger lot who are all too easily led by the nose.

Older people believe no one. (Been there, done that.) They'll look for the best deals and may happily buy from Currys, which sometimes offers better prices than some allegedly cheaper on-line operators.

They also indulge in shopping around rather than slavish adherence to this month's trendiest outlet. They'll do Lidl and Waitrose, rather than just Tesco.

Some older people also have a social conscience and do not want to shovel their pensions into the hands of a bunch of Americans who think it is sissy to pay taxes.

It is called taste and discrimination.

But don't tell anyone. We don't want to have to queue with brainless youngsters who don't know how to count their change.

I thought Dixon's Group was already partnered with Phones4U (also observed by a previous commenter) why do they need to assimilate Carphone Warehouse as well?

Do they simply want to absorb all of the subpar technology outlets into one, enormous, amorphous blob of awful customer service and overpriced goods?

edit: oops, just noticed I'm a little late to the party, apologies.

They should all bundle together then all go under in one massive swoop. I wouldn't object to that

Both of them are very bad in their customer services. In the past 3 years I've never purchased a product from them. I would prefer John Lewis for electric slt and phones4u for mobiles

I don't shop with them much but it's very handy to be able to just grab something off the shelf

I think something more important that people miss in their hatred of these stores is it's another few thousand jobs lost and yet more retail parks turning into "affordable property" soon we won't have any character in towns or high streets it'll be rows upon rows of housing.

      Not for me thanks

      Phones4U??

Aren't they the mob run by the guy whose patter includes "incentivising" his staff by telling them they could end up as rich (multi millionarire many times over) as he is, purely by selling as much as they can?

I'm not certain, but I think they are heavily bonus driven and you can't be sure you've come out with what is genuinely the right deal for you.

CPW for example, pay their staff the same commission, whether you walk out signed to Vodafone, O2, EE etc, I'm sure the same can't be said for P4U.

I need to look the P4U owner up now, someone Caldwell...?

      [Edit] - John Caudwell.

Phones 4u - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I've always avoided them like I would Dixons, Currys & PCWorld.

My local Currys store is now a big shadow of it's former self since it was majorly refurbished back around this time in 2010 and renamed to Currys PC World. :(

With resistance from Phones4U who I guess would be booted out of the Currys stores when this goes ahead.
