Hi,
Just had a look in my local Curry's store and came across a rather nice looking Amp and speakers, didn't have much time to look at the Spec, but it cost £400, was Silver,Sony (I think),and BRAND NEW to the Store, does anyone own one, is it worth it, and whats the spec, and is curry's a good place to buy from. I want to upgrade my present system of just a DVD player, and Tele,(combine around £1600) but just don't know the best place to buy from .

    Hi Jim
I hope this is not a windup.

a rather nice looking Amp and speakers

This is not a flame, but, that should have been nice sounding amp and speakers. I suggest you decide your budget, then read some reviews of equipment in you price range, then go out and listen to them.
I would try and get my equipment at a specialist dealer as you generally get better advice and service. On the other hand you just might get something on sale in Currys.

Specialist dealers are not right for every one.

I do agree that listening is more important than looks !!

As a very general rule, any member of the Dixons Stores Group - Dixons, Currys, The Link, PC World.... is NEVER the best place to buy anything. In all probability, the product will be overpriced. The sales staff will be completely unable to offer you any details about the product, other than what it says on the shelf-edge label. The store will not have a sensible range of alternatives. And their after sales service is dismal. The same goes for Comet.

Unless, of course they mess up their pricing as they did recently with the Sony 1070 but how often does that happen ?

Currys and amps/receivers do not go together.

Also, how can someone offer an opinion on a piece of equipment that maybe a Sony, is silver and new to Currys?

Judging by your post, you are exactly the sort of customer Currys prey on.

Guys don't forget those people who do not have access to City life/ specialist shops and are afraid to mail order.

Who gives a $hit what comet and curry's staff say, I agree. If you post on this forum you have an information advantage straight away. Secondly you also buy the magazine and read the reviews. You don't need to ask any Curry's or Comet staff questions as it is better answered here and the mag.

I bet there are lots of people that buy from these stores who pertain to be 'experts' but don't own up. I have !! (I am not an expert though) I bet also some people don't even audition kit before buying, they look at the review and JUMP. You know who U are !!!

My mate bought an installation from a well known english installer for £50k and had to have them visit 8 times and replace 2 projectors and two Processors.

    Yeah !!

    Regards

I may be guilty here too then..

I bought a Sony STRDE475 recently via internet for less than £200 and was seriously tempted by a complete Sony package ie the speakers too. This is where I got stuck - basically I could not find a shop etc that stocked the Sony package and had an adition facility. Therefore I relied on the Forum and searched for days to find that the Sony speakers (SAVE series) got a slating. I was then stuck. I wanted looks above all else as the wife did not want great big things but the cute little ones and I had a small budget. So having been in a similar position I sympathise a little as each place (Richer included) had differing advice and limited audition facilities and they were short on patience. SO I took a lucky dip and went for a finance deal on the KEF KHT package and did not tell the wife how much they really were. Besides, this was the only real sub sat combo availbale for audition (at 7 oaks BTW). Having got it all together I'm well chuffed and I reckon the speakers are the most important aspect of a system. The amp not quite so important IMHO. So to Curry's - well at least you can speak to a human but agree that they'll be slightly overpriced. You could always get note the model numbers and buy on the net to save £'s. Good luck.

    Hi Jim

By Amp and speakers, do you mean just that, or a mini/midi system, containing a tuner, and c.d. player?

I’m sure if you post your price limit, and what you relay want, your bound to get some recommendations.
