Just how cheap can you go WRT to S/H projector, DIY screen, low end scaler and such? I'm thinking Sony 127X series is the way to go, but someone correct me if I'm wrong.

    I built my first set-up with;

    Sony 1271
    DIY 8' Screen
    HTPC Scaler
    Panasonic 5.1 Receiver & Speakers

    For about £2,500 Stg.

I've since upgraded the receiver, HTPC and SUB some speakers but as a starting point, that was a great, flexible set-up for, in my opinion, next to nothing

I had originally looked at going down the new LDC, Screen, DVD, Reciever route and was looking at about 20K - granted well specced with Sony VPL-11HT, Pioneer 747 and top amp but still, a working set-up for about 10% of the cost! And I built it modular so I could swap individual elements as I wished.

You should be able to build something even cheaper today as I know prices on the 1271 have dropped since I bought

    Hope that helps

    Peter

    Thanks Gordon and Retro.
Gordon, I think that the freight charge might be more than the cost of the projector in that case:laugh:
Retro, I hope for Roland's sake that list is out of date, as it doesn't seem to have changed in a very long time, and unless he's doing a roaring trade in new projectors business would appear to be bad:eek: :D

I'm somewhat haphazardly splattered along the M3, as it says in my profile, with occasional dalliances towards Oxford.

    Hi All,

I'm looking into getting a crt projector for my cinema sometime soon ??

What kind of units do you recommend for a starter unit, and what prices do these units start at ??

I'm currently using an OHP & LCD video panel..... (Cheapest way of getting into large screen movie viewing !! :D

Prices of new bulbs put me off buying an lcd video projector, and i like the picture of a crt unit.

I suppose the only downside is the size and weight of these units, and the cost of replacement parts.

Do they cost a lot to run, or is that a load of rubbish ??

    Cheers
