Sony KD32dx51 giving better picture than KD32DC11 and latter is current model, both 50Hz and both CRT.
I am seeing a high compression woolly JPG type picture on all LCD’s and saw the same on the 32DC11.

LCD will come into its own with High Definition broadcast so losing the woolliness,
Sky first with £100/month…ouch !…Freeview later and free…but when ?
I have no intention of paying Telewest £100 if they follow suit.
IS THIS POOR JPG QLTY IMAGE normal until HD broadcast happens …if so forget it !

I shall be playing back my existing recordings, now being transferred to DVD, and my DVD movies on my just purchased DVD/HDD Panny EH50. What of these, will I see woolly pictures when before they were crisp ?

LCD…its important to sit further back than my 5ft CRT distance, then woolliness goes…but unable to move further back, but then also the screen ceases to be so big in my view, so the picture is smaller in my vision. 4 times screen is viewing distance, so who has 13ft seat to 40inch screen distance ?

You will need a V series Sony, better than S series, has High res processor not so woolly, get a KDL-V32A12U,…a mere £1800.

Are the shop models set up wrong, why so woolly and will my footage and movies be like this ?

Existing DVD movies you can play back with a Sony RDR HXD90, it will uprate them to HD. Having just bought my Panny that’s a pain !

Just not sure about this LCD thing at all.

I'll second that with my Philips 32pw9570! put the pixel plus 2 feature on and the picture quality's better than any Lcd and plasma and even with the forthcoming "HD ready" B.S.

So what if the set takes up 12-15 inches of space behind it... what you gonna do with that space behind the set anyway... let the kids play hide and seek or stash a pot of gold behind it?? :D

Very true ina way...you need to have all the playback and audio equipment stashed under it anyway which WILL take 10-15 inches of space from the wall no matter if you hang the damn thing on the wall or put it on a stand...you gain some viewing distance, though (cca 10 inches) which makes the difference between the depths of plasma vs CRT...but the only GOOD reason for a plasma really is it's size vs price ratio...a 42 inch plasma is cheaper than a 36 inch CRT...and god knows I want to fill my field of vision with picture...
