I may be overly paranoid about this, but I'd rather not end up in unexpected situations. Our daughter (under two years old) has my surname. Normally all three of us (wife, daughter and myself) would travel abroad together, however due to some unusual circumstances (wife has some courses going on), I'm thinking of going over to France to see my parents just with the little one, no wife this time. There are no other complications, we all live together, etc.

The Gov website isn't totally clear on this to my eyes; it seems to say that if we have the same surname then I (as the father) would still need a letter from the mother, agreeing to my taking the child out of the country.

Has anyone else dealt with this, am I getting the right idea? Can it just be a simple letter, signed and with her contact details?

I've driven over numerous borders (including France) many a time with my sons when the Mrs has been busy elsewhere. Never had to show more than a passport at control, never been asked a single question regarding them either.

The advice is always at the extreme to deal with the outside chances you get a border control person on a bad day as the complaints from people who do have a problem will always be much louder.

We have a lot of visitors from south america and mum, dad and kids all have different surnames from each other (and thats before we consider step kids) and none have ever had a problem.

Border guards, in my experience, don't tend to be great either here or elsewhere and deal with many things based on gut reaction more than anything else. Before becoming British the Mrs had an EEA Dependent in her passport which was from her ex, when we travelled together and I used my Irish passport we were never once questioned (obviously adding 1 and 1 together and getting 4) but twice when she was travelling on her own she was challenged on the validty of her status.

The best one still though was the Italian one trying to run her old hand written passport through the machine reader and after giving up on that then trying the Indian Visa that was in the middle of the passport - clearly trying anything other than having to type in the details

Well, sounds theoretically pain-free then. If they don't believe me, I can show them how she imitates all the stupid things that daddy does, that'll convince them :rotfl::blush:

According the gummiment website you need 'consent' from all with parental responsibility. How this would be checked I don't know - maybe take a letter or brief video from SWMBO? :)

Is there a form I can fill in that allows border control to take our kids off us at the start of the holiday and we pick them up on the way back through?

You know what, in all those years it never crossed my mind and never been a problem....And my children don't even speak Dutch...And when I travelled with them to visit my parents in Belgium I was on a Dutch passport and they are on a British passport. Never been a problem....

But if you are the nervous type, just carry a letter from the mother.

What on earth are you on about? They either have the nationality or they don't....The law is very clear about that...

Being serious for a minute, does the little'un have her own passport or is she by any chance on her mothers as an accompanying child (if they still do that).

Strange: our youngest is only 14 and she was on my wife's passport when we went abroad in ~2005. Or at least I think she was, I'll check when she gets in.
