Okay, final query before I buy a camera:clap:

A D300 is 12MP and a 40D is 10MP but with some marketing spiel about smaller gaps between photosites etc.

Does that mean that cropping the same picture would give the same results or would the extra 2MP make a difference?

I guess I wouldn't want to buy a 40D then find out that I was constrained by submitting to a stock site because the image quality doesn't allow cropping to their standard if that makes sense?
Of course I could buy the Nikon take 100 pictures a year and have an expensive toy- but with nice black lenses at least;)

The difference between 10Mp and 12Mp is very small. I wouldn't bother factoring it in to your decision really.

I figured this may be the case. I see you're a 40D user and your pics are great so can't fault the camera there. I also suppose if you get it right first time then there's no need to crop.

Your zoom lens is still white though;)

12MP vs 10MP is negligible difference, and this is coming from a Nikon fanboy.

The D300 is better all round than a 40D, but you're paying quite a lot for extra goodies, as the 40D is amazing value.

For me, the higher res screen, AF module and slightly better high ISO shooting would justify it (and the Nikon ergonomics).

If you fancy the extra megapixels the new 50D is still cheaper than the D300

    Agree
The D300 is a better camera but Im not sure the difference in cost= difference in output which a great many times has less to do with body but more with tog and lenses

as you are obviously worried about the colour of the lenses and seem to factoring that into your camera choice does that mean you are a woman?;)

Don't have a voucher- did have a look for one but this and another comment got me thinking about ebay anyway thanks.

As for the 50D, I know it's cheaper than the D300 but consensus seems to be that the 40D is better so I think if I was to go with Canon it would be the 40D (or 5D Mk II if I lost my sanity;))

40D is a bargain, and is excellent. Why not put the money saved on camera bodies into some good glass? If going Canon, look at the L lenses.

Base your decision on the range of lenses though, as that will pretty much tie you into the brand. Both Nikon and Canon are excellent.
