Why are Criterion titles so expensive. What's so different about them, compared to the usual/normal dvd.

Limited pressings due to the low volumes sold, frequent deletions from the catalogue, and brand cachet. I can't think of many DVD publishers that have their reputation.

They pick classic and contemporary films, and make a real effort to obtain new transfers of films, such that the film is the best presentation available. They also make an effort with the extras and quite often commision commentaries from relevant experts and scholars. A lot of their films are foreign language for which they commission new subtitles - this costs money for a niche publisher.

They also include classic films that just aren't widely available on dvd anywhere else, eg Eyes Without a Face, superior to the french dvd release which doesn't have english subs (according to dvdcompare.net). Ironically, some folk on the Criterion Forum complained that the extras could've been better.

If it's any good to you, CD-Wow have dropped the price of their Criterions by a few quid. With vouchers, the prices are cheaper than buying chart DVDs from your local HMV or Virgin.

Don't forget that they also have to licence these titles from the original copyright owners as well, which doubtless adds to the expense.

    Great label!
